No heat. Help!!

hi, I’m new to the forum, this is actually my first post. I am desperate, I have no heat in my car. We noticed it after new headunit, amps, speaker install. Don’t know if it happened to be a coincidence or not. The HVAC control panel does not adjust the vent the air comes out of. All the air seems to come out of the passengers side front window defroster. The temp does not change but it does control the fan speed. Took it to the local Mercedes dealer and they can’t get the car to communicate with the diagnostic machine. They said every module in the car was bad and needed to be replaced. I asked how that was possible, the car runs and everything works except the heat. They insist the modules are bad and need to be fixed ($5k+) before the heat issue can be addressed. I’m on disability and a fixed income, I don’t have the extra money to keep throughing at it. The thermostat and radiator have already been replaced. Anyone have any suggestions

The story about the car not communicating with the "machine" sounds like BS to me. That's the purpose of the OBDII port, they hook it up and it lets them diagnose issue. The new stereo install is a hint though. Not sure what year or model you have the newer cars use a Canbus system where the various computers talk to each other and connecting power to the wrong place can really cause issues. My advise would be to head back to the stereo shop, have them check things out and as a last resort un-connect the power, turn the car off, let it sit a few minutes and then start it up and see if it returns to normal. If it does it's your lucky day and then have them connect the power for the stereo to somewhere else, then check things before you drive off. Other choice is another MB dealer. Could be as simple as a blend door that just happened to go bad, there are several that direct the air through the various vents.

Welcome to the forum! Please take a moment to visit the User Control Panel and update your profile to include your location (at least country). This information will then appear below your name and avatar on the left side panel next to each post you make. This will greatly help others to give you better information. If you are using the mobile version of the site, you will need to switch to the "full" version to get to the User Control Panel.

I suspect that when the radio was replaced, someone did not plug all of the connectors back into the back of the ACC panel. I'd start there.

Sorry, I am using my phone to post. It’s a 2006 CLK 500. I unplugged the harness from the back of the radio and it made no difference. There is a small plug with “prongs” sticking out of it that is not attached to anything. It appears that it is supposed to go to a wire that is black and looks to have 3 wires invaded in plastic. This wire loops into the dash. It’s just long enough to reach the control panel. It has several holes in the plastic between the wires that seem to correspond to the prongs on the little plug. What is this black wire for? Could this b the issue?

Just like rudeney said, check the connections at the back of the climate control panel. There's a larger connection and a smaller 3 pin one. Both need to be connected for the ac to work properly. Otherwise you get symptoms like the ones you are describing.

What dealer told you to replace every module? They deserve a beating.

If you are talking about black connector with 3 black wires, than yes this guy should be connected HVAC control panel. I haven't had chance to play with facelifted CLK, but I'm pretty sure the wiring is almost the same. Check that you have two connectors connected to HVAC control panel - one is that black connector with black wires and another one - bigger with about 10ish wires.
If you can just take couple of photos with removed panel around stereo it might help

Looks like the installer of the radio caught the 3 wire cable between the radio and something, check it carefully to make sure it didn't cut through the insulation. If it did it could have caused a short. If just squished then maybe OK. Either way it needs to be repaired by properly soldering and putting shrink wrap on it. And that's assuming it's just 3 individual wires and not an optic cable. Looks pretty beat up to me. This is all the installer's fault, he needs to be responsible and get it fixed or take it to MB and send him the bill. If this is indicative of the quality of his work I'd wonder what else is messed up, hate to sound negative.

Taking it back to the installer is unfortunately out of the question. The car ran fine but didn’t have heat, would say my right front parking light was out when it wasn’t, and the headrest issue. The thing with the lights and horn just started sunday

I hear you about not taking it back but that damage didn't happen by itself, good luck
