Welcome to the forum! Please take a moment to visit the User Control Panel and update your profile to include your location (at least country). This information will then appear below your name and avatar on the left side panel next to each post you make. This will greatly help others to give you better information. If you are using the mobile version of the site, you will need to switch to the "full" version to get to the User Control Panel.

While the known "balance shaft" failure problem was resolved back in 2006, it is always possible that mechanical failures can occur. In your case, you have checked the timing stamps and found that the camshafts are not out of sync, so it's probably not balance shaft failure. This code means that the intake camshaft on the right bank is retarded, i.e. behind the angular position that is expected to be in. Assuming that the timing chain is in the correct position and not stretched or loose, then it's the adjuster not operating properly.

What I would suggest, if you have the tools and skills, is to swap the the right intake camshaft adjuster solenoid with one on the left bank. While you have the solenoids removed, actuate the pin on the end of the adjuster to check that it operates smoothly, and compare it to the other adjuster you are swapping solenoids with. If it's very stiff or very loose, then you have a bad adjuster. If it feels fine, then clear codes and see what happens. If the code stays on the right intake, then try swapping the camshaft position sensors. If the code still stays on the right intake, then it's the adjuster. In that case, it could just be that the hydraulic passageways in it are clogged from dirty oil. One possible way to fix that is use a 229.1 spec oil in the engine, run at high load for 30 minutes, change, do it again, then change to 229.5 spec and a new filter. Otherwise, the adjuster may need to be replaced and that's a fairly involved and expensive job.

Did you ever figure out what it was? I have the same code on my 2011 e350.
