Need help 03 clk500 loud clunking under car
Hello , I'm completely new to this forum and I really need help. My 03 clk500 makes an insanely loud clunking sound when letting off the gas after hard acceleration, it sounds like someone is punching the floor. That is the only time I ever hear the sound, it doesnt make it even when hitting large bumps or potholes. The car had almost no vibrations and suspension feels nice and tight. I'm thinking that it's the transmission mount, but I wanted to check if anyone here knows what it might be before I start replacing mounts and bushings. Thanks!

I'm not an expert, but my first guess would be engine and/or transmission mounts. On an '03, if they've never been replaced, they're almost certainly shot from my very limited experience (looking at two 2008 CLK550's whereby both had at least one leaking engine mount).
I would probably get it looked at sooner than later, as my understanding is that the engine wobbling around (due to a deficient mount or mounts) could break the exhaust. At least that's what my mechanic told me.

I agree with nkx1. When my engine mounts failed the clunk was mostly on acceleration. I think if it is mostly on deceleration my be an indication that it is the transmission mounts. You could set someone you trust who can hold the brake and pump the accelerator while you watch the engine. It will rock it the engine mounts are bad. When I had mine done I had both the engine and tranny mounts changed.
