One less CLK500

A kid turned in front of me and by doing so totaled out my CLK 500. Had the top down with the cruise set and all of a sudden he turned. I came to sitting in the turn lane with and airbag in my lap and glass everywhere. The car did save my life though and the other kid was alright as well, but I do miss the car badly already. 06 with only 49k miles on it 😞 Anyone have any idea what rim that was? If I find another I’d like to have the same rim and mine was destroyed on the front passenger side.

Wow that is awful! Thank God you are ok that is what matters. Good news is you can always find a CLK55 AMG Cabriolet now? Such a shame to loose such a low milage example thou.

chewtoy 06-06-2019 11:05 AM

Aw, crap. So sorry to read this. Like you said, the car did it's job. I know it's tough, we do put a lot into these cars, so having your efforts get nuked like this can really hurt. Hope the insurance pays for you to upgrade.

I found a CL63 this morning with a little over 100k miles on it. I want another convertible or I really want a CLK63 but those are hard to find for sure! I use to have an 06 SL, but I don’t like ABC suspension.

C280 Sport 06-06-2019 11:54 AM

You can find a CLK63 AMG Cabriolet they are out there but there is a premium. Also maybe try a E550 Cabriolet with the BiTurbo Engine?

Also, careful with the CL63 N/A because of headbolt issues. Just was looking at the pics of the CLK 500 again. What a beautiful car. Would you care to post more pics?

Glad to hear that no one was seriously hurt in the accident. Sorry to see that the car is fubar.

I probably wouldn't want to bother with the head bolts issue of the CLK63 unless I could do the work cheaply myself. I recall it being an expensive job (from some brief research a while back).

The newer turbo'd E class coupes are nice (and they are fast), but I'm skeptical of their reliability. 2010-2011 E class coupes still have the NA 550 motor, but you get the newer body style of the E class. That's probably the route I would go (or a C6 Corvette Grand Sport haha).

Rudeney 06-06-2019 10:21 PM

Sorry to hear about the accident. I would stay away from the AMG 6.2l M156 engines. The head bolt and lifter problems are very expensive to repair, even as a DIY. Get a 2008/2009 CLK550.

OR-CLK350 06-06-2019 10:41 PM

Glad to hear you are ok... Its sad to ser one of these wonderful cars go fo good... I’ve 2008/2009 CLK’s are very decent price, w/low miles. Hopefully, you come to a good deal w/insurance... GOOD LUCK!

They seem to be pretty good. The N/A is rock solid too! And a simple tune gets the power up there as well.

I found a 2005 CLK 500 that’s a twin to my car, but the fog lights look different between 05 and 06 and maybe the bumper is slightly different. It’s hard to find an every option CLK 500 that’s black/black apparently. The 2005 has 106k miles on it also. $5800 is what they’re asking. I wasn’t aware of the 6.2 issues but that’s good to know. I don’t have many more pictures of my car, but I might have some on my old phone. I wish I could find a set of rims like the rims that were on my car. I can’t find them anywhere now. They were Brabus Monoblock S rims or replicas at least since I’ve never found a set that were black/brushed. My front passenger rim was busted in the accident.

The odds are that car with those miles are not in the shape of your previous CLK. From what it looks/sounds like you had a real cream puff before!

And then today the insurance company told me they found a comp for my car which is an 06 with 95k miles on it that’s 700+ miles away and they think my car is worth the same as it when it has roughly twice the mileage.

Upon further evaluation, maybe you got hurt in the accident after all lol.

In all seriousness, there is no way you didn't sustain at least some minor injury (soreness, etc.) after being in that accident. I was in a minor accident a little over a year ago (less serious than yours), and my neck was sore for a week. If they're going to be sticklers about the value of your car, then you might consider being a stickler about your minor injuries. You can pursue a claim yourself. Nolo books has pretty simple and easy-to-follow advice for such situations. "How to Win Your Personal Injury Claim" is one of them.

I would also challenge them on the car's value, of course.

C280 Sport 06-11-2019 08:24 AM

I saw online a 2006 CLK500 Cab with 64k miles for $12,000. So they better be giving you more then that. Challenge the cars value and show them other comps.

mcgsxrclk500 06-11-2019 09:18 AM

You need to find a set of those rims for sale somewhere and point out the value of those alone. THEN factor the other comps (I'd be using Autotrader.com) to see what else is reasonable.

Here's a set of 18's in the UK for sale - 2800 sterling, roughly $3500 USD!

It's an insurance company, they won't be negotiating DOWN, so count on a low initial offer. Stay firm with proof.

I had a work van totaled a couple years ago.(Drunk Driver) Book value was at $13,000. 4 years old. Just about to tick at 50,000 miles. Insurance company said we will give you $10,000. I said its worth $13,000. Literally had to meet someone at the dealership and show them the SAME van I had, the model, the options even the damn color! I had to fight tooth and nail to basically get my own money back! Eventually they gave me $13,000.

So sad to see your car get destroyed due to no fault of yours. What kind of car did the kid who caused the accident have? How bad did it get banged up in the wreck? It always amazes me when these types of accidents happen, on a clear day with perfect visibility, no less! Really, can this even be termed an "accident", when it seems like the dumb kid purposely just pulled into your path?

Rudeney 06-11-2019 09:32 PM

If this happened to me, I'd be calling the most obnoxious personal injury attorney I could find.

People are obviously imperfect creatures and frequently exercise less-than-ideal judgment (some more than others). My guess is that if the kid could hit "control z" and undo the whole situation, he would. This isn't to say that the kid isn't responsible for his actions- clearly he is. But I think accidents (maybe unintentional crashes?) like this are inevitable when people are involved (and probably even when robots are involved, though to a lesser degree). Therefore, I think that if the kid didn't purposely crash, it can probably be considered an accident for most reasonable intents and purposes.

Quick story (slight tangent, but still relevant): 14 or so years ago, I was backing out of a parking spot very slowly (because two large trucks were on each side of me and I couldn't see) and an older guy crashed into the side of my car (obviously he wasn't paying attention). In my opinion, he should have been the one solely at fault because of the two of us, he was the only one with a good view, and he was driving carelessly while I was driving cautiously (and there was no reasonable way for me to have done anything differently). Unfortunately, I made the mistake of giving a recorded statement to the guy's insurance company, and due to their voodoo trickery (leading questions, etc.), my statement was construed as me acknowledging partial fault (I forget exactly what I said). Because of that, the fault was split 50/50. The point of my little story is to never give a recorded statement to the other person's insurance company (in case anyone didn't already know this). It will almost never help you, and will frequently hurt you- all risk, no reward!

Rudeney 06-12-2019 10:33 PM

Whenever I'm in an accident and it's not my fault (that would be all but one), I call the at-fault's insurance directly and file a claim. One of the first things I say when they start recording is "I am asserting that your insured is 100% at fault, and that anything else I state in this conversation is in support of that." Sometimes they can be very good at asking leading questions and even "trick" questions (e.g. "have you stopped beating your wife yet?"). If I get asked anything that sounds leasing or tricky, I just say, "I'm sorry, I do not understand that question." I had one guy actually summarize things at the end of the call basically reversing everything I said and asked me to agree. My reply was, "You have the call recorded, so if you need to understand what I said, feel free to replay it." Oh, and I have an app on my cell phone that records ALL conversations. I live in a "one-party" state so I don;t even have to disclose that.

06SL500AMG 06-12-2019 11:30 PM

I met with an attorney today! I also sent comparable vehicles and a market value guide that based my value on other vehicles listed for sale through Manheim Auto Auctions. The money isn't what I am after. I want my car back, but it seems I've got to argue the value or the money part in order to get anything near what I had. I'm not as mad at the kid. Accidents do happen I suppose, but I wish he wouldn't have turned. Apparently the F150 he was driving belonged to his boss and they knew it had break issues. The kid blamed the breaks on the truck, yet he turned instead of staying in the lane he was in and using the emergency break.:nix:

irokdastar 06-13-2019 11:03 AM

Let me ask you . Is the insurance letting you keep the car ? I would be interested to take it off your hands

06SL500AMG 06-14-2019 10:28 AM

They gave me a buyout option but I’m not sure if I want to keep it or not. The interior and the top are mint, but I’m not sure about the rest of it after the accident. I know the timing cover was busted on the engine.

irokdastar 06-14-2019 12:20 PM

I really want the interior . My car has a grey interior and I am sick of it I want black seats . let me know if we can work it out . Thank you
