Overheating?

Should the radiator fan turn freely when cold? I just knocked it when I was working on something else and noted it spun easily several times. I was under the impression they are locked by a clutch. Is it faulty? It does run hot I noticed could it be old coolant, bad thermostat, faulty fan or do these cars run hot? Not sure if the exact temp on last run but it was one bar over 80 and felt pretty hot on the hood.

Thanks in advance

NO LONGER ACTIVE
The fan is electrically operated and controlled by the ECU. It will only run when needed.

Ok thanks Rudeney.

Just changed the control arms following your write up ages ago. All went well. Seems all good so far.

Had to replace the fuel pump too and that was considerably easier than expected.

Onto the next...

Possible washer pump died, although it had dropped full and think I may have stretched a wire or connection somewhere.
