2003 CLK Convertible roof not closing

Had the car sorned for a few months but taxed it today and as it was sunny(ish) in the west of Scotland I put the roof down.

all was well till 5 or so hours later I returned home and tried putting the roof up. I had a message “roof visit workshop”

my friend has one of these so I went to him and we compared both with his half way open. Using the manual opening procedure we discover that the netting cover where the hood sits when the roof is down, had both plastic pins broken. We replaced them with some small bolts and manually closed the hood.

we then lowered it again with no problems but when trying to close it electronically it came up with the same message.

we couldn’t find any other broken/missing parts so manually closed it again.

Does the car require a reset of an error code or something at a dealer to allow it to close from the switch or is there anything else i can check??

thanks for any advice..

Make sure that the trunk luggage partition is securely locked in place. It should take a good bit of force to push it back when it's closed. If not, then I''d replace its struts. You shoudl look locally, but here's the part you need (2 of them):

There's nothing to reset, though sometimes the limit switches can get out of sync. You cna do a few full manual open/close cycles and sometimes this will put them back in a default state.

If all else fails, get a scan tool that can read MBZ systems. SDS (MB Star) is best, but the Autel MD-802 Elite or the iCarsoft (MBII or i980) will work.

Thanks for the reply. When you say “trunk luggage partition” do you mean the net and it’s mechanism??

Do you have a W208 or W209? The W209 has a partition that you pull down in order to close off part of the trunk to accommodate the top.

It’s a w209 and when I lowered the roof, there was a baby seat in the boot and might have caused the partition to foul a bit and break off both plastic “hinge pins”??...replaced with bolts and we manually closed the roof but on lowering we hit the ‘top visit workshop’ message

OK, that message is not a problem with the partition. There is a fault condition, such as bad limit switch, that causes a "visit workshop" message. I suggest pulling codes. You can't use a generic OBDII code scanner - you need a tool that can read proprietary MBZ system. SDS (Star/Xentry) is the best, but cheaper/simpler alternatives include the Autel MD802, and the iCarsoft (MBII or i980 models).

Thanks for the reply. Will check with some owners of workshops I know if they have any of these devices.
