W209 CLK55 - 2003
Gear Selector Swap - anything to be aware of?

I'm about to replace the gear selector after reading a fairly standard set of error codes. Car is a 2003 CLK55.

I can see that I need to pull the center console and remove 3 bolts and a set of connectors inside the car. I understand that there is a gear linkage underneath the shifter that needs to be disconnected as well.

Two areas that I'd welcome views on:
- Is there anything specific I need to do underneath the car to detach the gear linkage? Do I need to remove any heat shields or is there a way to do it inside the car?
- Are there any areas that I might get caught out on with the lower center console removal? My car has a blower motor under the arm rest.

Hoping this is fairly straightforward, but don't want to be left with a car that can't move whilst I wait for parts or anything else.

There is nothing to disconnect from under the car. I'm not 100% sure, but I think you can remove the shifter even without remove center console.

That would be great. Workshop instructions suggest you need to remove the console, but it looks like it could be edged out with a squeeze.

Are you sure there are no clips? The video that I found suggests there is one that can only be done from below.

There is a "clip" or more C-clamp you need to remove in order to disconnect the shifter linkage, but to access it you simple need to lift the shifter and you'll have it. That is how I did it, but I removed the center console, maybe without removing it you won't have enough space to lift the shifter.
