Tranny question

While driving my kids to school this morning, the tranny seemed to be stuck in either first or second gear. I could not go any faster than about 20mph and the revs were up to about 4000. After I came to a stop and than started going again, it drove fine. I called the MB dealership and they told me it was because I probably hit the auto tranny position into the manual mode. I don't believe that is what I did. I also thought that when you hit it into manual mode, the display on the dash changes. Also, if the revs get to high, won't the computer automatically change it up to a higher gear?
I am a little worried because the car has less than 100 miles on it.

Sounds to me like you DID nudge it a bit ! The display line only changed from C or S to whatever gear is manually selected. Not the kind of thing you would notice unless you went looking !!

yeah it sounds like you probably just bumped it - if you hold it to downshift long enough (a couple seconds), it'll drop down into 1st. For the speed you reported, it sounds like it must have been in 1st.

Thanks for the replies. I have had no other problems since . Car is running great. I just thought that if the car did get bumped into manual and I didn't realize that I had done it, the computer would have automatically up shifted at a high enough rpm so as not to hurt the tranny.
Anyway, the car runs great and I am really enjoying driving it.
