Clicking sound when turning wheel
2006 CLK500 Cabriolet, 53k miles.
I'm getting a clicking sound in my passenger front wheel area when turning the wheel. This occurs even when not moving (at idle, with the motor running). It happens whether I turn left or right. I don't notice it on the highway, as I'm not really turning much, and I don't even recall hearing it when turning around an exit ramp. Only when at idle or driving locally making turns.
I already checked:
oil level
power steering fluid level
coolant level
torque and air pressure on all wheels
Here's what else I've done thus far:
Jacked up the car and tried to move the wheel in very direction. Very difficult and didn't hear a single sound.
Removed the wheel and inspected for leakage, looseness and sound. Didn't find anything.
Reattached the wheel (proper torque, of course).
I also suspect that the sound is there (or perhaps more prominent) when the weather is REALLY cold. The sound went away for a day, and I thought the remounting fixed it. But it didn't. But today is MUCH colder and suddenly the sound is back.
