04 CLK320 roof issue, please help troubleshoot!

I have an '04 CLK320 convertible, I believe it is the very first batch of the 209s in the US. I bought it with a salvage title, the roof has never worked since I've owned it but I really want to fix it now that the sun is coming back to San Diego

Basically I try to pull the roof switch, all that happens is all the windows go down like an inch or 2, then everything stops and the "top in operation" message turns into "top - visit workshop".
The hydraulic pump's reservoir has fluid between normal levels, the left locking cylinder that has that little button to pull and rotate to unlock won't pull out far enough to be able to twist it either direction.
The roof switch led blinks orange about once a second but no further information.
I have tried to sync the windows, though the rear ones will not respond to one-touch operation (not even sure if they're supposed to). Every time I pull the roof switch the windows roll a little further down than stop. Rollbars don't move at all, they're down. I have never seen the sequence of the roof operation in person, I see that the roof doesn't unlatch automatically above me in the front. Right now I would be happy if I could move the roof manually but I couldn't pull the tonneau cover up with the straps, and I'm 6'5 and 300 pounds so I doubt I wasn't strong enough. If anyone is more experienced in this topic, a little help would be greatly appreciated. I am happy to provide further information if needed.
Thanks very much and have a great day! Adam
