BRAKE NOISE F/R CALIPER
I have a 2007 CLK350 with P90 Sports App Pkg. 30K miles. It has 4 new Zimmerman rotors and Akebono pads installed in an attempt to fix the "clank" noise heard when the brake pedal is pushed during low speed operations such as in the driveway, garage area etc. Other than this noise, the braking seems normal.
Upon visual inspection, when the brake pedal is released, we see the inboard caliper piston retreat into the caliper bore leaving a 1/8" gap between the piston and pad. When the pedal is again pushed, the piston closes the gap and makes the clank noise when it hits the pad.
Questions:
What would make the piston retreat into the caliper instead of just "resting" on the pad when releasing the brake pedal?
Is there a fix for this condition or is this normal?
