CLK 280 Sport Cat rattle? Options please!
Hi all, not really a poster but have found help here in the past posts.
I'm pretty sure the rattle "like a golf ball in a scaffold pole" that appeared Sunday is a failing front right cat. I know there's faint hope it could be a broken bracket.
It's the what I imagine to be old question of how to replace without it costing an arm and a leg,I saw £1650 quoted yesterday and didn't feel good with it, especially looking at all the components of the system on the V6 costing far more than the old girl is worth.

I don't know how the exhaust and cats are laid out in a 280 but;
If there are primary and secondary cats you need to make sure which is bad. Rattling at the secondary could be due to a/the primary shedding it's guts. If this is the case and it is not addressed, the secondary cat will clog when the debris gets hot enough for pieces to melt and lodge into the passage way of the secondary cats.
My exhaust is completely modified; for many years now. I use Magnaflow hi-flow cats for all four cats. There are a number of makers of these hi-flow and traditional aftermarket cats. I think Vibrant has one of the best, most durable, offerings. They are also more expensive...... Flowmaster, Borla, and others also offer these.
OE cats generally come as a complete package with pipe and connectors. This is part of the reason they cost so much., You should be able to find an aftermarket single cat to have welded in place of the defective one/s...
