Problems with Central locking since flat car battery (fuse 08)

I recently went to start my CLK and discovered that the battery had gone totally flat.
I had used the key from the fob to get in the car, to see if it would start, to no avail.
I hooked up my battery charger, which has a ‘repair mode’ for dead flat batteries.
When I opened the drivers door, the hazards started flashing, but no audible alarm.
I know it was working about a month ago, as I deliberately set it off to see if it still worked.
Now I have an issue whereby the central locking won’t work from my fob.
Tonight I checked Fuse 8, which apparently covers the alarm and also ‘convenience locking’, which is what I assume the fob part uses.
Short of taking my car in to the Stealership, can anyone offer any suggestions as to whether the alarm might have packed up and is causing the fuse to blow.
As soon as I try to put a new fuse in location 8, it blows immediately.
Have also tried disconnecting the car battery for a while, but there was no change.
FYI, my car is a RHD 2003 CLK 320 (W209).
Cheers,
Graeme
