Wipers acting weird
Hi all, I have a 2004 CLK320 and the wipers are starting to have a mind of their own. I know this car has the feature where the wipers will operate when needed. Not sure what that is called. I don't know if this is malfunctioning or I have other issues. Basically at times they work as normal but other times I get nothing. All I seem to get is the ability to use the mist to make them move. they will not operate no matter where I set them other than pulling the lever like I was spraying the mister. I honestly do not know if I changed something as to be fair I never did anything when I got the car and they just worked. I got stuck in a downpour the other day and had to frantically keep running washer fluid on the windshield so I could see. Just wondering if maybe I changed something or is the device just broke/breaking? Thanks for any insight to this.... John.

The feature you describe is intermittent wipe. There is a sensor behind interior mirror that detects rainfall.
Do the wipers work on the second and third position of the stalk? these are continuous, and continuous fast wipers.
From WIS the rain sensor module only works in intermittent wipe position, so if only this position is affected this may be the issue. If it affects all switch settings, then the switch may be defective.
Best way to find out is get a diagnostic scanner with activation's, and ability to read switch positions to diagnose what is going on.
