2008 CLK 350 with gasoline smell
I have a 2008 Mercedes-Benz CLK 350 and I have noticed that there is a strong fuel smell if I fill the car all the way up with gasoline. I thought it might be the gas cap but gas cap seals well and fuel smell is definitely on drivers side. If the car is at three quarters of a tank or lower the fuel smell is not noticeable. I am suspecting a problem with fuel lines? Any thoughts? I am not mechanically inclined individual and not sure that I want to take this on, but is there a known issue with the fuel lines. I thought it might be an issue with the fuel filter but researching on line here sounds like the fuel filter is in the fuel pump. The car runs well and does not respond like it has a fuel problem.

I am 99% sure it is that the seals on the sender and fuel pump units can fail and leak. They should be replaced as the revised seals are thicker. If not that then the other issue is a leak where the pressure sensor attaches to the top of the sender (see image below - it's the black connector.
I had the same issue as you with the gas smell….. however mine was neither of these. My wife just accidentally overfilled the car and some gas spilt. Majority of CLK’s have the exact issue that you are describing.

It's the sending unit, i order one and went back in and the leak stopped i guess moving it stopped it so i am going to hold off changing it.
