California Legal Muffler
I would like to upgrade the muffler on my 2002 CLK55. I was thinking about installing an Eisenmann Racing muffler but noticed on their website the muffler is not CARB compliant. How have those of you who have installed Eisenmann mufflers and who live in California passed the smog checks?

Mufflers dont affect smog emissions system, as is the case with anything after the cat converters. Any muffler will pass smog however it might get you a ticket if its too loud depending ont he noise regs in your area.

Thank you both for taking the time to respond and providing the enlightening information. It sounds (no pun intended) like it is time to install a muffler.

Somre more info:
The CARB Executive Order basically states that the exhaust you have on your car is within acceptable limits and if a police officer cites you for modified exhaust, the CARB EO is exempting your muffler from a violation. Nonetheless, if he has pulled you over, the officer may still issue you a citation (to meet his quota of course) and have you take your MBZ to your local police station for a $10 fix-it ticket sign off.
That being said, it is rare to see a police officer cite a Mercedes-Benz for a modified exhaust! Most of the time they'll cite you for speeding or something else.
