Need some advice on buying a 2003 CLK55 AMG

Hi guys,

what do you guys think of this CLK55 amg on ebay?
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...9613313#buyers

I have never owned an AMG car before. The mileage on this car I saw on ebay is pretty high, at 48k miles. I am a bit uncomfortable buying this car with only a little factory warranty left on the car.

Do you guys know if there are any known problems (mechanically) for the 2003 CLK55 AMG? Is there a way I can get the starmark warranty from MB if a buy the car from a non MB dealer?

Ask mechanics at MB dealers or specialised shops. When I asked one the answer was that the 208 was more reliable than the 209, as least towards the end of its production run. As a general rule I would stay away from the first year of any car. That being said, neither 208 or 209 CLKs have a particularly bad reuptation for reliability. This model seems to do better than the bigger Benzes. And all Benzes do well where it really counts, the motor.

The salesman at my MB dealer also said the 208 was more reliable ... but then again he was busy selling me my 208 .

I had a W208, last model 2002 was the worst year in Consumer Reports. I dont think you would be able to tell without first hand having the car checked.

Thanks for the tips! I really would like to have this car checked before I buy it, too bad the car is located in Atlanta, GA, and I live in Philadelphia PA. I know that you can send an independent inspector like www.carchex.com to check out the car, but I am not sure how thorough they are when checking the car. Or another option is to have the dealer drop the car off at an MB dealer at my expense, I don't know if the dealer will do this

Well if they dont do it, it might be a good indicator that there "might" be something wrong with the car. It is best to get star marked cars (with extended warranty) if you are going to get an MB, in my opinion.

Also if you are looking for a CLK55, you can call local dealers and let them know. They might get stuff from auctions.

MBs are pretty pricey to fix if something is wrong due to expensive OEM parts and costly labor at MB dealers.

It is a big investment 35K. Good luck.

If you get it you will love it. Also later models have the inside changed, I highly suggest you checking 2005 W209. Once the 63 is out probably 55 will further depreciate.

I still have the 2002 W208 CLK AMG and has 50,000 miles. No problems yet.

That car looks clean.....even the engine bay is cleaner than mine! But then again looks can be deceiving! I think the price is too high for the milage. My CLK55 has 24K miles on it and I doubt I would be able to get $38K for it.
