a clk is an E class coupe, sure it uses the C class bottom frame, but its the E class's sister so it has more technology than C. clk costs just behind an Eclass

Since you've waited this long whats another year? The new M comes out in October, and you can expect a price drop on the older model over the next year. The differences between the clk55 and m3 are pretty vast, but if it we're my money I would buy the E46m3, it is without a doubt the nicest looking car BMW has ever made. It's also probably the last years of the N/A I6 in their flagship car.
In my opinion Mercedes is the best sedan choice, and BMW are the best sport sedan choice.

I drove both, and I got CLK55..
as a dd, CLK is much better, the tranny is much smoother (vs SMG)
and shifts quick enough..
I love the fact of low end torque..l that I never had on my S4..
My stage 3 s4 is lot faster than CLK55, but I love CLK55 as much as my Audi..
CLK has something that nobody has...

I had this same dilemma a few years back. I drove the CLK55 and the M3, and the M3 won. To me, it was much sportier than the CLK. The CLK had too much body roll and was a bit of a slouch (sorry).
If MB had the CLK63 when I was looking, however, I would have bought the CLK, hands down. The HP and Torque would have made up for the "sportiness" of the M3.
