BMW M3
Hey Chappy

The P car is nice...but I need a car that accomodates my big size and actually has a trunk and a back seat that are useable. So that is why I love the M3...it is a daily (somewhat) driver sports car and offers a compromise that fits many needs and still gives that sports car feel.

Understood....and agree that every car to some extent is a compromise. Personally, I think the days of a 'pure' manual transmission may be numbered.

Take a look at the increasing percentage of Lambos, Ferraris, Porsches and (yes, even M3s) that are being sold with SMG, Tiptronic or other similar variation. Truth is, these gearbox forms outperform the pure manual transmission.

Hang onto your cab....and enjoy!

Obviously this is going to come down to personal preference in the end. However, my question is why is this a coupe to convertible comparison as opposed to a coupe to coupe comparison? I've driven the M3 convertible and it's noticeably slower than the coupe. Combine that with the torque advantage of the CLK55 and it probably feels like night and day speedwise when comparing the M3 cab with the CLK55 coupe. Personally I like to rev the crap out of cars but a lot of folks prefer more torque. So much so that when my brother asked my opinion as to which car he should get next, I suggested the new C63 over the new V8 M3 (based on my reading etc.) Anyway, both are great cars IMHO so drive both and enjoy your final choice.

according to fueleconomy.com we get better gasmileage too

M3- http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/noframes/16498.shtml
338 HP / 262 TQ
0-60 MPH - 4.8 seconds
1/4 Mile - 13.1@105 MPH[3]
Top Speed: 155 MPH!

clk55- http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/noframes/16524.shtml
3323 LBS
342 HP / 376 TQ
0-60 MPH - 4.8 seconds
1/4 Mile - 13.48@106
Top Speed: 155 MPH!

and tthe M3's are concidered gas guzlers(they are right on the line, so they pay more toward the taxes,LOL). and comparing the 1/4 mile speeds I am assuming that the clk is more of a highway car(or another thing I heard is clk's have traction issues). the v8 has a much nicer sound. the only advantage I could think about is the bimmer has a cheaper aftermarket(body kits, superchargers, turbos, etc).

but like everyone else said, it depends what your looking for CLK is more power better fuel economy and the famous MB reliability, and advancements.

CLK's and M3's are both available in hardtop and cabriolet. both are similarly equipped and both are very nice cars. but its all preference.
