No screws. Wood around shifter comes off first by pulling up on the front of the wood where the ashtray lid meets the shifter wood. After the wood around the shifter is removed, there are two small tabs toward the front sides of the ashtray that hold it in.
After reading reading again I see that you need to replace the wood (maybe?) on the ashtray lid. It should kind of slide towards the back of the car, with only some small tabs/nipples holding it in place. Easier to do with the ashtray removed.

oldschoolrice thanks for the help but im still having some trouble. i ended taking off the shifter panel but it really didnt matter. You say the silver trim piece should slide off the lid if i pull towards me correct? well i can get it to budge. let me know if you have anymore advice.
im trying to take it off to make an identical molded custom piece to put back on that i can put a hk dp1us drive and play into since my w209 isnt compatible with the ipod connect mercedes offers. its going to look real good. ill post pictures after i get it done i just need to get this darn piece off first.

OK just got the install finished. I just ended up removing the entire ash tray and moving the cigarette lighter to the side. It cost me about $300 for every thing including the HK dp1us unit. Tell me what you guys thing.

Hi guys,
I have an old rubbish interior phone and I removed it from the dash panel but there is still the cable that I should disconnect. How can I remove the panel on which the flash light is shining in the penultimate picture? Since I have the old phone mount right there bellow the cup holder and I don't just want to cut the cable.
