High Mileage AMG's

I am interested in purchasing a CLK55. Probably a used '05 or '06. I have seen some with 60k and some with 80k miles. I am assuming that I should stay away from performance cars with such high mileage. They might have loads of problems waiting for me. Can anyone confirm this? Are there any things that are specific to high mileage AMG cars? What are the usual things to worry about with high mileage performance cars?

CLK55 AMG
My '01 has 85k miles on it now. It has been trouble free so far. I just noticed today my motor mounts are broken though.

What is the typical repair cost for this car? Is the motor mounts a common issue, what would it cost to repair? I am pretty sure the vehicle I purchase won't come with a warranty. Can you compare the ride in the CLK55 vs. the CLK500? Is it a major difference?

CLK55 AMG
I can't compare the 2 cars unfortunately.
I did just order the motor mounts for $65 each from Autohaus AZ. The write up looks like it takes about 1.5 hours or so. Doesn't seem too hard. And yes, the motor mounts do seem to be common wear item.

Just an FYI, 2005 was the last year for the coupe. After that they just came in convertibles.

My car is a 2003 and it has 40K miles on it right now. I want this car to go to 200K miles easily. The engine should handle that no problem....its the normal wear and tear items that will kill you. Brakes and rotors.....front and rear ball joints.......numerous electrical problems (head rests not going up or down). You get the point. Just expect a hefty bill when something breaks. Of course owning an AMG is worth it. And I can't really complain too much....only problems I've had were the broken headrests. Both covered under warranty.
Maybe try to find a used one with an optional warranty. That will help.
Good luck.

I currently own an ML that's still under warranty, I've had one fluid leak with it and that was fixed with a scheduled A service. If I purchase an extended warranty for the CLK would I be able to take it to my regular Mercedes dealer when there is something wrong or would I have to pick from a list of dealers that the issuer provides?

When you say hefty what range are we talking about? Also do you have any input on the ride quality? I've had some friends favor the SL 500 over the SL 55 because of ride quality, whats your opinion of the ride quality?

Amgs have stiffer suspension meaning a harder ride then a regular Benz. Parts are expensive rotors $250 each fronts. Pads I use Hawks ceramic $95 pair fronts. Expect to pay a little more then your average car.

I was expecting it to be more, I mainly am trying to figure out how much more than a regular Benz. How much stiffer of a ride are we talking about? Is it still a smooth ride compared to lower priced cars, or just stiff compared to a normal benz?

CLK55 AMG
The ride in my 55 is a little more stiff than my 430. Not by much though. To me it still rides like a grandma car so I put H&R lowering springs in it which helped. It still rides really well, just less like a boat.

Trust me, that will not be a concern for you. The suspension on Mercedes, AMG or not, is focused on comfort rather than performance. Think SOFT!!!!

I guess I am close to (150K) with @115K, it goes in for service whithin the next 1000 miles. I do know that I need to have head gaskets replaced as they have been leaking for a while but I just watch the oil level and add a little when needed.
I had the motor mounts replaced last year, my wife thinks they need replacing again, may be the case as i tend to everywhere I go
The car is daily driven about 100miles each day, so far no real compaints.
I am forever ruined by AMG
Hope this helps

I have an 05 C55 with ~70k no drivetrain problems ever but I do have stupid electrical problems pop up here and there.

no sound out of the speakers (fixed. pulled fuse to reset system)
driver side HID would not auto level (intermittent)
