Check strap issue

Check strap issue
I have a 2001 CLK 55 and although this issue relates to other cars, I thought I'd post it here first. I noticed my drivers side door was making some excessive "clacking" sounds when opening and closing it. In the past, I have been able to tighten the bolts on the assembly that attaches from the door to the body of the car. This time the bolts are not the issue, but the check strap instead. I thought I might spray some lubricant on the check strap it self, on the exposed part, and also inside the door panel to see if this would alleviate the excessive clacking that was coming from inside the door panel. What happened was that the clacking went away entirely and now where the door normally would pause at the 2 points where the clacking used to be, it now just swings open freely. I'm not sure what's worse, the clacking or the door now not recognizing the points at which it normally would rest. I physically wiped the check strap off to see it that would remove the excess lubricant, but when doing so I noticed that it was now loose, as opposed to the other side where attempting to shake the check strap was impossible because it feels secured inside the door panel. Any advise?

You can easily replace the check strap yourself. All you have to do is take the door panel off and take off the front speaker. Unbolt the check strap and pull it out through the speaker hole opening. Replace the check strap and bolt everything back together.

Thanks
Greg, thanks for your reply. I'm a DIY'er but I'm leery of taking the door panel off for fear of breaking some of the clips if I do it incorrectly. I guess I'll look to find a good picture demo here in the forum first. If you happen to have a link to one, it would be much appreciated!
