Just got '01 CLK55!!

Hey guys,

I'm a new CLK55 owner! Just traded my '02 BMW M3 for it. I'm looking to make some mods to the CLK and was hoping you guys can point me in the right direction. I'm looking for a replacement for the hood ornament (flat, and preferrably AMG emblem??), front grille, and wheels. Any good webstore for these?

thannks,
mike

Welcome and congrats! Why did you trade your MMM...did you have the exploding engine option?

Hi Mike,

Welcome to the World of Beast. You'll love the car, complete balance of luxury and speed.

What color and options did you get?

Here's my little friend from the East.

Happy modding!!!!!!

Thanks guys! Exploding engine option was an upgrade!!! I traded my M3 mainly b/c of the pending recall that is going to occur here soon. They (BMW dealer) were going to replace my oil pump...take apart my engine and replace my rods...if they determined if it was replaceable. Otherwise, I'd get a new engine. I don't trust my local BMW dealership to change my oil...much less take apart my engine and put it back together!! The CLK55 is definately a nice blend of luxury and power. Do you guys know of any known problems w/ the '01 CLK55's? I guess I should have asked this question before I bought the car, but I wanted to get rid of the M3 quickly....

Joe55,
I got Silver/Black. Love your rims. What kind are they and where can I get them?

One more thing, I like the AMG illuminated door sills. Is this available at the dealer and is it easy to install?

Allot of place have them try "FORMYMERCEDES"
My dealer wanted $400.00 plus installation fee.
I paid about $150.00 for mine "AMG Version"
I made a "DIY" how to installation instruction guide.
It's fairly simple to do.
Let me know when you get the door sills I'll forward you the DIY.

As for problems mostly minor things. I haven't heard of anything major. Other than my window washers doesn't always work. That's about it on my 02.
Later,
Tim

Thanks, they're 19in HREs, and I got them from Eppie's Tire in Philly. Shop them around, they're alot of carriers, espesially on the West Coast. Check/call places like Evosport, Wheelexperts, Bydesign, Eppies etc. Also, you can grab the door sills off ebay for ~1/2 the price than from the dealer.

Good luck,

Joe

Hi Timster,

That'd be great if you could send me the DIY. My email is in my profile. I went to formymercedes.com, but couldn't find the door sill. I'll give them a call tomorrow. Thanks again!

Congrats. Like everyone else here, I'm sure you'll love your 55. To answer your question, there are no serious problems with the 55. Some CLKs have problems with the express-up window function where the windows roll back down 4 inches. The first time you complain, the dealer will resync them with a laptop. The 2nd time you complain, the dealer will actually replace to controller unit which will allow you to resync the windows when they "bounce" at the top when you roll them up. (see manual how to resync once you have good controller boxes.)

The Bose radio stinks. My Ford F150 has a better sounding radio.

You can drive the snot out of the 55 and it will hold up just fine. I get 9,000 miles out of my tires from driving so hard.

Get a radar detector. Valentine or Escort Passport.

The paint is like butter, so be careful of chips.

When you drop it off for MB service, do it on a Friday afternoon so you get a decent loaner car.

2 years ago, I was going to get the 430 until I saw someone on this board (maybe Hammerdown) write "I'm married with kids and my 55 is the only thing that gives me such pleasure." I'm not married, but that sentence was enough to make me get the 55 and I've never regretted it. Ever.

Have fun!

Oh yeah, and don't be like some of the idiots and drive around with the ESP usually off. No matter how good of a driver you are, you can't squeeze the inside wheel brake caliper to pivot you around an otherwise deadly unexpected turn. I'm alive today because when I misjudged a fast turn, ESP pivoted my car around a turn at 80 mph. If ESP was off, I would have slid sideways and painted some eucalyptus trees.

Hey Mike,
Here are some pics of my SSRs.
http://www.32k.com/clk55/

I now prefer chunkier wheels like the HREs or Carlssons. But the SSRs are the lightest wheels I could find which helps with acceleration. The so called "unsprung" weight difference is like having an extra passenger in the car. It's too bad so many great looking wheels are so heavy. LowRydeR's Senekas are sweet too. For SSRs, check out tirerack.com.
