A/C issue

Summer time in Houston, Texas is not the time to have A/C issues. Here is the main issue:

When I first start up the car, the A/C works fine. When I start up the car again (when the engine is still warm), the compressor won't turn on unless I throttle the bejeesus out of car (past 5,000 rpm). The shop is telling me that I need to drop $1400 on a new compressor. The compressor seems to be working fine (blows very cold when it's working). I know our compressor is valve activated rather than a typical clutch system.

Any takers on what the problem might be? Any help / input is appreciated.

.
Did they test the pressure switch near the receiver/drier? The pressure switch activates the compressor. Can they "jump" the AC compressor when the AC controls are set to OFF? I would get a second opinion.

SC,

They attached a computer and attempted to turn the compressor on but it wouldn't take. I am going to take it to another place to get another opinion.
