Push start button in shifter knob.
Here is the cause and solution for the problem:
the engine start button that is in the "leather shifter" has 2 metal prongs that connect into the "shifter stem" (the skinny stick that actually changes the car from PRNDL, as opposed to the "fancy" thick leather handle). Often times people twist the "handle" thereby cracking these pins and breaking the connection. The solution is, remove the boot and shifter, solder the pins back and voila it should work.
Step by step:
1. Remove the entire boot and plastic piece that says PRNDL by gently pulling upward (towards roof of car) around the edges, note there could be some glue.
2. BE CAREFUL HERE. there are 2 connections before you can remove the boot entirely.
3. Once disconnected, Pull the boot and shifter upward and with a little strength/force it should come right off.
HERE IS WHERE YOU SEE IN MY PICTURE THE BROKEN OFF PINS INSIDE THE SHIFTER STEM

4. Remove the broken off pins from the shifter

5. Disassemble the boot. Push inside out and twist the first black plastic piece. May need to wiggle but it should twist and click once and come off easily.
6. Next step is a locking ring with a 4 sided plastic piece and that needs to all be pushed in at the same time so it can pass through the ring. You can use a pliers - I squeezed 2 together with my finger, stuck a small glasses flat head screwdriver to push the 2 depressed pieces passed the ring so it stays in the position and then did the same for the other 2 and it popped right off.
7. At this point, you can remove the shifter from the leather boot.
8. Remove decorative silver ring - should come right off no wiggling or twisting needed.
9. Here's where it could be a little tricky. The shifter knob is actually 2 pieces which splits along the silver trim. This can easily slide off from one another OR there could be some glue on the top. Mine did not come off straight away so I wedged a small eyeglasses screwdriver along the edges and gently pried until I got some spaced and loosened the glue. Once I did this, I "slid" one part from the other and with a little force, it popped off.
10. This will expose 2 plastic tangs/prongs that need to be squeezed together which will completely release the silver button and it's cylinder from the rest of the shifter knob. If this doesn't come out easily, run a small blade along the edge of the silver trim around the Start Engine button as there could be some glue holding it in place. it should easily pop out once the tangs or compressed.
11. You will see the other half of the broken, twisted metal prongs. These need to be straighten and soldered back together and once they are, it should connect back into the shifter stem and work.
I am not done for tonight so hopefully will post more pictures when I solder and a video if I get it to work.
