The Car Needs Ball Joints at 30K Miles? W208...
Folks,
I just got back from the dealer to have the coolant flushed/replaced. No big deal.
I asked them to check the car over since I am taking a long trip in a few weeks. They come back and tell me that the car will soon need the upper and lower ball joints replaced. At 30K miles I see this as very strange.
What is your collective experience in this area? Who has had to get this done and at what mileage? Or is the dealer working me over?
Thanks.

Mercedes-Benz CLK63 AMG Coupe
Hey guys,
Hmm, I remember hearing something about ball joints when I was looking for a 55AMG (208) early last year.
As I can remember, when I was looking over a 55 (208), I was told by the owner, that the front wheels "splay" when under full accelleration, resulting in the need to change the front ball joints quite regularly (or more often than normal).
He said that this was quite common.
I hadn't heard this before and thought the guy was talking sh#t.
But I think I heard this mentioned again at some point too.
So maybe there is some truth to it.
Anyway, not sure if this post is of any use, but I just thought I chip-in anyway.

Splay?
Thanks for all the responses...
I would think that hard accelleration, which lifts the front end, would pull the wheels in at the bottom where they meet the pavement. On the other hand, the rears might squat or splay out...
Also, I had new tires installed maybe 2 months ago. I remember watching the tech tugging on the wheels to check for play. He found none, or at least he did not mention anything to me...
