help - AMG wheel has hairline crack
hi all,
just found out i there's a line/crack on the inside of my front left 18" AMG wheels. do you think this is worth trying to repair, or is this even worth trying?
my local SF wheel guy said it's not worth fixing because it'll never be as good.
also, given that the only replacement is i've found is $900 new from MB dealer, am i better off just buying new wheels?
thx guys.

is it leaking pretty bad right now?
he's righ tthough, it will never be the same, but i figure if you're not driving 100+ mph, i don't think you really need to worry about it.
for $900, i'd just buy some replicas if I were you.

Any wheel that shows signs of cracking is toast. I would not even attempt to repair something like this. Failure is imminent, and most likely will come at the worst time. Good luck.

I don't know that I would ever feel comfortable driving on a cracked wheel, even if repaired.

I had 3 AMG wheels repaired a few months ago. I kept on buying new rims (stupid NY/NJ roads) but then found a good aluminum wheel guy who also does a lot of CNC work. He is a super welder. Charged me $90 each however. I use one of the wheels daily and the other two have drag radials on and I use them at the 1/4 mile track. So, find a good shop and be prepared to pay.

Bingo. The right answer. Repaired wheels are like retread tires. Not worth the risk. MBZ does have an issue will defective wheels (there is a class action lawsuit going on). Worst case, buy some used wheels that have not been repaired or get some forged wheels. Run your air pressure a few lbs higher. Even worse case, get an SUV beater for winter and spring months when the road really get in bad shape.

I bought a new wheel for my w209 CLK55 from them a few years ago.
Their customer service is top notch.
They also deal in Porsche, and many brands of SUV parts.

cracked mb wheels
Below is a response to a post I recently found. The post is below mine.
Hello Danny,
I saw an old post from you regarding MB wheel cracks. I don't know if anything is ongoing about this issue but if you can advise me on possible actions, I'd appreciate it.
I purchased a used CPO E350 with AMG 18" wheels in March 2010. I slowly lost air in one wheel since I got it and had it checked out several times with no results until this week (8/9/11) when I begged the service dept to determine the source. They told me the air loss was from a cracked wheel and was not covered by any warranty. Additionally, another wheel was bent but was serviceable. It cost me $1,101.58 for a new wheel. I researched repair records prior to my ownership and discovered the previous owner had at least four service calls for "Sign and Drive Flattire" on 2/25/08 4/8/08, 2/23/09 and 5/8/09 (and perhaps 7/9/09) apparently covered under warranty (03-Warranty 0001). I have attached pictures and it appears that there is something unusual (bumps) where the cracks starts.
I live in CT but purchased the car in MA. If you need more information, let me know. I hope I can get some relief from cost of this and any other wheel problems.
cracking MB wheels
MB has a silent TSB out to their MB dealers about this problem (see statement below). There is a class action lawsuit in place now and one of the class plaintiffs went through 11 wheels. So, I am searching for MB owners who has a wheel cracking problem. The wheels must be the OEM originals that came with the car at the time of purchase. The attorneys I am working with need MB 2006 and up with wheel cracking problems to contact me, so I can see if the cracks are in the same location or various locations. I feel the cracking of the wheels are from a bad casting. Please let other MB 2006 and up know about this problem and have them to contact me via email and phone.

Radial Crack in Light Alloy Disk Wheel
Through inspection of returned warranty parts, it has become evident that light alloy disk wheels are being replaced under warranty for radial cracks. This type of damage is attributable to driving over obstacles and resulting punctures. The rim flange becomes deformed and a radial crack occurs immediately or later due to the vehicle's operating load. This type of damage is not covered under warranty.
Low section tires also significantly contribute to mechanical damage because of their lower side wall height and the possibility of a crack can be exacerbated by low tire inflation pressure.
For safety reasons, a tire should be replaced after it has been punctured to preclude internal fabric damage of the tire carcass.

Cracked rim update - Repaired
After getting no where with requests to cover my cracked AMG rim, I finally had it repaired. After paying $1,000 for a replacement from the dealer, I asked for the old rim. They pulled it from the dumpster and I took it home. I sent pictures to a laywer and there was no recourse for me in CT.
I asked around about repairs and and the consensus was split, ok or not ok to repair. I found a repair shop that specialized in alloy rim repair and had them fix it for $75. (City Welding, Worcester, MA) The welder said the repair would be as strong if not stronger than the rest of the rim. He said they got a lot of BMW rims because, like MB, they are made of a high quality alloy that does not bend - they crack instead. I'll keep the repaired rim as a spare to avoid the $1,000 replacement of the next damaged rim. Bill

Amg rear wheel crack
My Mercedes c250 estate amg sport was purchased new by myself 18months ago may 2011 I have now travelled 40,000 miles trouble free ,the car is faultless until last week that is my rear tyre had a puncture ,so I thought.until my tyre company said it is not your tyre that is the problem,it is your alloy rim that has an hair line crack,I immediately contacted my local Mercedes dealership who immediately said it was impact damage, and was not covered under warranty, but they could supply a new Amg wheel for £545 ,I am very disappointed ,to say the least, does anyone have any suggestions,as it seems Mercedes have had many similar problems but have denied responsibility,I believe there is an ongoing court case against Mercedes re these Amg alloy wheels, has anyone got any information on this court case ,I have been told Mercedes are to big to take to court.if anyone has any information to help me with this dispute with Mercedes please send email to nidge@rochvalleyhomes.co.uk many thanks

My car had a cracked rim when I bought it, but it was repaired... didnt notice it while driving but used it as an excuse to buy some new wheels anyway... I wouldn't want to drive on them, especially on our earthquake damaged roads...
Be safe and get new wheels!
