Damn......
I've missed out on all the fun.
You guys appear to be taking yourselves too seriously here.

BTW at Hockenhiem, the W209 CLK55 is slower than the E55, either W210 or W211, so it is neither faster in a straight line or around a track in standard form, maybe it can level peg the S55??

where did that number came from?? MB/AMG claim 4.9 for the 208 55 coupe and 5 second for the 209 55 coupe.

btw, C32 beats'em both by .13 seconds at 4.77 0-60 run test by R&T.

the point is, who cares!! They are both nice cars. And all AMGs are nice cars.

Exclamation I have yet to see a magazine test of the 209 55...

Being that the manufacturers' numbers aren't very reliable (for whatever reason), we won't know which of the two 55's are quicker until a reputable magazine tests the 209 55. Ideally, there would be a back-to-back test of the 208 vs the 209, but I doubt we will see that in any magazine. Personally, I think it will be a wash. The 209 has the obvious weight penalty (around 265 lbs if I'm not mistaken), but it enjoys a 20 hp advantage, and FAR more importantly, it has shorter gearing. Either way, I'd rather have the 209. It handles better, has a nicer interior (IMHO), and it has the b-pillarless design. Anyway, that's just my two cents...

Best regards,
Matt

Well, I did drive the CLK55, S55, CL55, and E55 back to back over the course of the day at Daytona. All I can say is that I do not agree with the author's conclusion. The CLK was a nicer driving and handling machine than I expected it to be. The turn in and fairly neutral characteristics made it very enjoyable to throw around the track. The author's implying that the CLK engine was more responsive and braking superior as evidenced by his ability to gain ground and close on the other more powerful cars on the track says more about his driving ability or lack of ability of the other drivers. I personally have quite a bit of track experience and formula ford series racing and personally quickly approached and passed other cars regardless which car I was in. The point here is, the CLK was a nice car, but it is not the best or most enjoyable AMG car IMO.

The E55 was clearly the favorite amongst our group. It is definitely the fastest but it also gives the best all around package with handling, acceleration, and braking. All but one of the five or six professional drivers with our group preferred the E55 also.

The CL55 was great on the track and handled like a smaller lighter machine. It is my favorite overall car that Mercedes builds.

I did not care for the S55 due to its weight and more body roll.

The SL55 was great to throw around the autocross course. Not to pat myself on the back too obviously, but of the 70 people at the AMG challenge, I had the quickest lap time, surpassed by only 50% of the professional autocrossers.

After spending the day with these machines, I can truly say that the CLK is really in a different catagory than its supercharged 8 cylinder brethren. I would place it closer to the C32 than the E55 in regards to driving satisfaction.

Maybe I'm just a little biased, but that's about as objective that I could be.

Thanks for the first hand feedback from this Daytona AMG race track event.

Your conclusions do make perfect sense.

I don't understand why so much misinformation is always contaminating the media, by so called experienced and seasoned journalists.

Their bias is deplorable.

Well said, Dr. Chill, and you did it without starting a pissing match like most people do around here.

Common sense.

Add 3 cement bags to the car and it slows down considerably.

does that mean you are behind the wheel or do you really put 3 cement bags in the car? it must only be common when you are around.

You are off topic again.

I'm sorry, I'm not someone constantly making ridiculous comments based on imaginary fact or his own beliefs.

alright, since you want to stay on topic...where did you see that they put 3 bags of cements in the 209 CLK55 and makes it 0.5 second slower to the 208 CLK55.

Article is in edit, soon to be released. Stay tuned.

ps -

Delay is caused by controversy over "cement". Publisher wants to use substitute: Sand.

Additionally, he insists on time from the Timex stop watch, which he thinks is more reliable than the Rolex timing, -- indicating a .8 difference rather than the .5 you are quoting.

:o
