W211 E55 wheels on W208 Clk55

Hi,

I'm looking at putting E55 wheels on my 2001 CLK55, and would be interested to know if anyone has done this before, and if there are any issues regarding rubbing etc.

The car is standard with no suspension mods

The E55 wheels are 8.5 x 18 T30 front, and 9.5 x 18 T33 rear, with a 112 x 5 bolt pattern.

I'd also like to keep my existing tyres which are 225/40 F and 255/35 R, and put these on the E55 wheels.

Does anyone know if there'd be any issues with doing this?

Cheers.

Yes, this looks near identical to what I did with my previous/current 19" wheels. Assuming of course your current setup is with 18" tyres / tires, which your new wheels are.

There are a couple who have. I think the only real issue is a minor spacer issue on the rear sometimes (depends on your suspension and tires).

I have a set of 18" E55 Monoblocks on my W208 CLK55 with 245/40/18 on front and 275/35/18 on rear and have full stock springs/struts. I had some rubbing in reverse on the front inside plastic bumper shield from the front tires, and on high-speed cornering or hard bumps the rears would briefly rub the inside top liner behind the spring. No issues in regular forward driving around town. I recommend going narrower on both front and rear tires, prob. 235 max width front, and 265 max rear or checking for spacers as needed. If you're lowered, be even more careful to check all fitments first.

boxeswithknobs - what difference was there in reverse vs forward (sound, area of tire rubbing, etc)? Just curious as I occasionally get an odd sound when in reverse (though obviously not in reverse for very long, and not too concerned).

No issue in forward direction, but in reverse, and depending on whether on a level or incline, when the front wheels are turned about 30 degrees the edge of tire can rub against the the vent grille on the inner liner behind front bumper. You could switch to a narrower tire (225 or 235), or dremel the vent, or use some zip ties to tension it more forward and out of the way. It's like a 1/4-1/2" clearance issue only in reverse AND at angle/turn-in/out.

Thanks for the detail! That must be exactly it - I only hear it when reversing into my condo parking space at just about the same description as you have above. I'm assuming I'm okay to let it go as this is only for a few seconds when I'm parking and no damage (I think) is really being done.
