UPDATE:

Replaced the transmission oil filter cos the ATF still looked pretty bad.

After 10 more quarts its starting to look better. Gonna run a gallon more just in case

Had the tube disconnect and ATF spilled all over the engine once

Now that looks much better. If this doesn't fix it at least you'll know it's not the fluid

And yeah the fluid comes out pretty quickly. I had somebody hold the hose down in a bucket. Was a fun little project.

My 2008 CLK 63 has the same tendency to roll backwards rather than idle forward when in gear and off the gas on an incline. I didn't check this in sport mode though.

C mode starts the transmission in 2nd gear (the shift clunk) once the switch is pressed. I'm still learning, but I think what you're experiencing is not a faulty transmission slip.

My W208, however, holds fast in both transmission modes. I'd like to know more about this too.

Indeed.

Interesting, I have to check out that out. I haven't had a chance to test it out in S mode yet....

My CLK 63 holds steady on an incline at idle when in 1st gear (sport mode). The comfort setting shifts to 2nd at a stop and the car will slip backwards at idle if on an incline.

Update

So after nealy 25 liters (That's $500 of ATF) I am quite happy with what is coming out of the tranny.

I finally put everything together filled it up and took it for a quick spin to get it warmed up. About 3 miles later the CEL came on and the car went to limp home mode. I came back and checked the OBD code and it was P0715: "Input/Turbine Speed Sensor "A" Circuit".

Then I checked the ATF level and was down. So I refilled and reset the code and drove about 300 miles and the CEL didn't go off yet.

Back to the initial problem: The tranny responds much much better that it used to. It starts pulling at below 1500 rpm (used top be 2000) in comfort

Wasn't able to test this. But you are correct. The car starts in second when in comfort. And pulls easier when in sport or manual.

Unfortunately here in Idaho the temperature is already way below zero and the CLK is in storage for the winter. More testing in the Spirng hopefully

It could be your conductor plate. This would explain the OBD code and your transmission problems.

A great DIY video on the 722.6 conductor plate replacement, this is part four in a six part series.

Thanks guys. I will definitely look into this once the weather gets a little better. It doesn't look like that difficult either

Thinking through the past this symptom points me to believe the Main pump has excessive clearance or the torque converter has a mind of its own, in other words the bushings/bearings are creating a fluid coupling loss.
Mainline pressure is highest in reverse, so if there are no symptoms of loss in reverse. The converter is not coupling properly.
Favorable for drag racers but a nuisance in daily driving.
Keep us posted and thanks for sharing the Conductor plate link, I am getting ready to put one in a ML430 for a friend.

All the Best, Gator
