Flooded Clk55
There is a is car dealer who is trying to sell me a 2001 CLK55 with 9k miles but engine has flood damage. He says there is no rust and interior is perfect. The vehicle is $39k and $5k to fix the engine. He also says that there are no electrical probelms meaning that the water only hit the front end which was the motor. Any reliabity on a flooded engine being fixed and how much would it cost to buy a new engine? Any advice as to whether I should buy this car? Thank you.

Theres a lot of important electronics in the compartment the other side to the fusebox.
So, be sure that the inside of the fusebox didnt get wet, and the controllers in the box on the otherside.
The engine wiring loom goes into the that box, and if the engine wiring loom got wet, i'd replace it. [When engines leave the engine factory they are completely built, with the wiring loom installed]
I have no idea about wet mechanical bits !

55LOVER,
Is the dealer a Mercedes dealer ? If so, will Mercedes honor any remaining warranty, or are you stuck with "Sold as is" ?

Make sure you have the dealer cap the fixes to $5K. Some try and gouge you in the end by telling you that something unexpected came up and that you'll need to dish out more money for them to finish.

All of them, as much as I can...
Why doesn't he front the $5K...
If this dealer had faith in the integrity of this car, he should front the $5K to bring the car up to snuff then sell it.
It sounds like he's waiting for the right "emotional buyer" to fall in love with the car's looks (like we all tend to do)
then pounce with this seemingly sweet deal.
I wonder if he'd agree to an independent oil analysis to look for internal rust?
I did that on a small airplane prepurchase inspection. This one just "sat" for 3 years and we found rust, for an adjusted price, ended up overhauling the engine and found badly pitted cam lobes (from internal corrosion from sitting and dry starts). Imagine an engine that soaked in water?
