Rain/Light sensor on windscreen

Hello members. Anyone know how this works? I have disconnected mine as I decided to clean up the krap behind it probably from a damaged windscreen before my ownership of the car. I hadta remove some glue that smelt like candle gel. The retards even stuck the holder back to the black sticker on the windscreen with something like Q-Bond or Pretley steel putty. I bought some strong adhesive valcro which I have used on the number plates and it apparently can hold up to 5kg of weight. It holds like you cant imagine to the number plates. Anyway, I know how the light part works. How does the rain sensor work? I threw water over the windscreen in front of the sensor and nothing happened. Is the wiper suppose to be on or something for this feature to work or what?
Thanks in advance

The wiper switch on the stalk has to be on the A or automatic setting for the wipers to work, engine running.

Another thought,

The sensor is located in the rear view mirror housing.

Try dusting or cleaning the lens.
