coilovers - pros and cons

I am a noobie when it comes to mods and would appreciate some basic help if anyone can oblige. I have searched for info on coilovers but still looking for basic info.

1. I assume they lower the car to improve handling by lowering the centre of gravity. This also improves appearance - any other pros for coilovers ?

2. Any cons to having them except increased chance of grounding the chassis when going over sleeping policemen ?

I like the AMG setup as a good compromise between sports handling and luxury ride. I assume that most mods will slide the scale towards better sports handling but further away from ride comfort. (eg's 19" wheels / wider tyres / stiffer springs)

It souds like coilovers would not decrease ride comfort - is this true ?

What are the implications of coilovers with 18" wheels ?

Also, I gather that 18" wheels are standard for UK and 17" standard for US - anyone know why ?

I also assume that the car is built with a set of components that make up a finely tuned setup. Won't altering the setup make the parts unbalanced ?

Finally, any links for understanding the basics of car modification ?

cheers
Paul

Just found this thread which has helped me decide not to bother.

I'm still interested in my original questions though.
