CLK55 AMG: Ultimate Combo of Cheap, Fast, Reliable?

It sold for a hefty sum when new, but the CLK55 can be had for comparitive pennies these days.

Until my full transmission rebuild... even then not really. Certainly more reliable than anything with airmatic or sbc.

2001 MB CLK55 AMG [gone]
Great example, though it has 150k miles and is the first year of the new model, engine with SC.

The interior of this model is newer, but I find it looks very plastic, cheap. Just my opinion. I know many prefer the SC models due to performance upgrade options. I'd liked to know how reliable they are, given all things being equal to the W208s?

Thoughts, experience from the members? I see one member had to get the transmission rebuilt, but overall what are the differences in maintenance and reliability with the new model?

Thank you,
Brad

If you ignore the suspension and braking systems then the supercharged cars are almost as reliable engine wise. Usually intercooler pumps, pulleys and occasional belt problems. Mostly not too hard to fix. Every once in a while someone will post up with an intercooler leak or fuel problem which are a bit more involved to sort out.

2002 CLK55 AMG
I've heard the 2003's had bad radiator issues. Yes I think they are a steal and have bottomed out price-wise so they should not depreciate much more. I think the 2003+ are plasticy too, and the interiors might not be as durable. I bought a 2002 previous body style which is more classic and doesn't look like a dodge Neon from behind. They are built like tanks but have silly electrical glitches that you can DYI fix without electrical knowledge.
