the endless wheel/tire question...

ok, how 'bout this... leave the stock 17" monoblock on the fronts, and go to an 18" e55 monoblock (w210)w/ 265's on the rear. how would this handle/hook up and look?

I believe Improviz has this set up. He has posted some very impressive 0 to 60 times since he gained the added traction. He also said that the ride quality was basically unchanged.

Yeah, I did this:

I got the idea from Corvettes, which have 17/18 f/r. Figured that if the rears didn't look out of place on them, the CLK would be fine! I stuck with the 17's on front for ride quality as monoblockz stated. I would say that there was a *bit* of degredation in ride quality, but hardly noticeable. Noise also went up a bit, but that is as much a function of tire choice as anything.

It did help the 0-60 times substantially by allowing me faster hole shots, but it is still very tricky to get a launch without excessive spin. Still, they definitely hook up *much* better than the stock 245s did.

Handling-wise: depends upon how crazy you drive! I get spirited at times but nothing too crazy; if you really push it hard and often, you may ending up wanting to go with a bit wider fronts (235s would probably do) to keep the balance. But I'm perfectly happy with it, and have stayed with the stock-width front tires.

Before and after:

I haven't taken it back to the 1/4 mile track since I switched (it was too hot!), but I have done some GTECH runs. Prior to switching to the new tires, the best 0-60 I could get was about 5.1, mainly because I couldn't get a good launch due to tire spin.

Since switching, the best I've done was 4.77, and can hit consistent hi 4's without difficulty. Considering that I ran a 13.4 with the stock rubber, I'm certain I can get in the very low 13's with the new tires, possibly a bit better if the track conditions are good, but I'm not sure how soon I'll be going back out there...lots going on right now! When I do, I'll post results.

Oh, almost forgot: no, I don't have any mods other than the rear tires.
