One track session-engine knock
Was excited about my first HPDE with my 2001 CLK 55....About midway through the session the engine started making a racket-now I'm left with this. Will drain the oil and check for metallic. Anyone done a bottom end rebuild?

Yep the rod and main bearings are not 19.99 like Chevy and Ford. They are hardened customized for AMG Forged Crankshaft. $$$$$$$$
Any folks with bottom end noise should park the car fast and mic the suspect before the car becomes a boneyard relic.
My 2 Cents

I have avoided driving it and changed the oil yesterday-did not see any metallic in the drained oil. I'm wondering if the noise is coming from elsewhere. I have found a number of threads about these engines having a diesel like sound due to top end wear. Think I will remove valve covers and check the valve train next.

Engine noises
Most noises from under the valve cover are clicking ticking and higher pitched rap.
a diesel knocking sound can be piston bushing.
You could attempt a cylinder kill 1 at a time with star diagnostics or remove one coil pack primary connection at a time.

Check your exhaust.
My c43 had a very similar noise, turned out to be a cracked exhaust header.
Most likely cracked from extra stress. Mine was cracked near the engine block where it bolts to it.
