Soften the ride

My 2001 CLK55 W208 has an incredibly stiff ride what can be done to soften it a little or maybe quite a bit? Any experience here? New tires or shocks and coils? What would make the most difference?

It's hard to say without more information. Is the car lowered? Does it have any aftermarket suspension pieces? What size tires and wheels does it have?

My best suggestion would be to make sure everything is stock and in good working order. The ride on that car shouldn't be overly stiff from the factory, so my guess is a previous owner put aftermarket stuff on it.

I have seen nothing on the car that would indicate a performance minded person owned the car (I think a lady owned it)...it was not garage kept as I spent a week cleaning pine needles out of the rain trough (it was plugged solid).

Definitely not lowered...tires are Goodyear Eagle Sport (I believe that's stock).

How man miles and do you know if the shocks have ever been changed?

I have 121K on my 2002 CLK55 and it is pretty stiff and clunky. I know shocks are needed and hopefully handling soon. The are tricky to find for this car so feel free to message me if need be. I've done a ton a research.

These cars have a pretty firm ride IMO.

Control arm bushing failure is common and can make lots of noise.

The car has $96K on it and do not believe the shocks have ever been changed. Thanks I will message for the research you have done.

Nothing is clunking around it's just very stiff...personally, I think it's the tires...and possible the motor mount that one person mentioned about. I will have to check them.

These cars do have a harsh suspension. it starts to feel like a Benz around 70 mph. AMG equipped them with large sway bars and springs to accommodate track use.
The first owner of my cab traded it in under 1000 miles.
I came out of a W124 with hydraulic rear suspension and it was like driving on glass.

One will have to detune the suspension to take the rock hard race car feel out of this car.
I have tweaked super late model race car chassis that ride smoother than this. oh Well
Cheers, gator

i think you bought the wrong car, most of the reviews at the time said stuff like "dental insurance may be needed due to teeth chattering stiff ride"
its a performance car if you can't feel the road it wouldn't be doing its job properly
