Fuel Smell in W208 CLK55

Hello,
Lately my 2002 CLK55 has a fuel smell while driving. I just drove and I have 2/3 of a tank of gas and can smell gas so I don't think it is only when the tank is full. I have looked through the forums here but seeing this issue mostly with other models. Does anyone know the the fuel senders are under the rear seats on the W208? I believe they are in the W209 so I would assume yes. Any other advice? My gas cap is original so it is 20 years old. Try some UvDye and look for a leak?

thank you!

It is under the car. look driver rear under the plastic guard. If you smell it inside it may be the filler tube seal.

Thanks for the responses. I went the dealer a couple days ago and picked up a new gas cap. Why not. I think it helped. When I drove today I got a faint smell of gas with the windows open and with them closed and A/C on. It was brief and then gone. If I smell near the gas cap or wheel well I can still smell gas so I think @Ahmed maybe right about the filler tube seal. Is the filler tube seal a pretty easy DIY fix?

Well, I found the leak. Gas is pouring our pretty bad. It was not this bad so I think something got worse in the last couple days. I drove it yesterday and could smell the gas and after parking I noticed a trail of liquid behind the car. It was gas. I just started it up and took some pics and a video. Not good. I don't know what it is but it's on the passenger side rear,. Maybe it is line or hose that goes to the fuel pump on the drivers side. My indy is 20 miles away and my dad has a lift at his house but that is 30 miles away. I am not sure driving that far and on the highway is a good idea with this much gas leaking out. Any thoughts on what might be leaking? I am thinking of towing to my indy. I live in the city and park on the street so its tricky for me to jack it up and investigate.

Here is a video and pics.

Remove that black plastic cover that shields the fuel pump and filter. It is most likely a rotten hose. It will be easy to diagnose with that cover removed. (I think it's held on by three 10-mm plastic nuts)

Thanks @JoeJErnst . Do you think driving the car is a bad idea with this leak?

Yes, driving it like that would be a horrible idea. It looks like you are about to have the entire tank of gas on the road, so I'd fix it where it sits if possible. If you do have to drive, don't go far enough to get the exhaust hot.

Just wanted to report that my issue was a bad hose / hose clamp. $172 later I am all good
