the other day, I went to the dealer to pick up something. they had a pre-owned 2003 500 SL on the showroom floor (asking $85k) and the dealer didn't do anything to the paint chips.

It really depends on the amount of rock chips on the car. If it's on the metal panels, then yes, you should touch them up because those areas exposed will rust. Since the front bumper is made of urethane, then you wouldn't need to worry about rusting. If it looks like it's been sandblasted, then repainting of the bumper is the common road to take. Once you repaint the bumper, it is highly recommended to have the paint covered with a clearbra.

Rock chips are actually pretty common even at the dealership level since many of their cars get rotated in and out of the showroom. Test drives that end up on the freeway can easily pick up a chip or two even w/ nano technology. Most of the vehicles we wrap at the dealership, I would say that over half of them have at least a chip or two on the front bumper. The dealerships generally don't care much about them unless it's very visible.
