CLK55 broke down..

2001 CLK55
CLK55 broke down..
Well this morning, my car started to loose power - followed by the check engine light coming on. Gas gauge did show low, but computer said I had 15 miles to go.
The car then died and would not restart. I called roadside, they felt I may have run out of gas. I added a gallon, drove home. Engine was still rough and check light on.
What do you folks think is happening? Should I just fill it up and drive or take it in?
