The CLK-DTM has a supercharged engine. But the actual output is higher than the official stats. It is the fastest street car MB has ever built. It can be brought in from Germany as a collector's vehicle (probably cant drive it on NA roads).

Back in the mid to late 1980's I raced my 1970SS Big Block Camaro in NHRA Super Pro class. One Sunday after the race we went to the local chow house to eat dinner. Our buddy had a Chevy Pick up with 28 foot enclosed trailer and one of the sweetest 1969 Camaro's I have ever seen inside. He came out of the restaurant to find the whole thing gone. To this day they still never found it

Derek, That CLK DTM has 582HP, 590lb/ft. of torque, and most important it's about 500lbs. lighter than your E55 (there is no back seat and most if not all of the interior is carbon fiber) . Don't forget weight plays a major roll in performance.

Question My guess is that Derek is refering to his 1/4 mile time...

I'm assuming that what the 11.65 second/120.7 mph, 1/4 mile run in his sig is about. I don't recall the stats for the CLK GTR, but I believe Derek's car is indeed slightly quicker. Having said that though, and please understand that's a truly extraordinary achievement for an E55, but 1/4 mile drag racing is not what the CLK GTR was intended for. I'm sure that in every other performance category the GTR would demolish any E55. If I recall correctly, the CLK GTR has a very tall first gear, like most race cars, and I'm sure that with ordinary road car ratios, it would be the faster of the two. Again, and not to belabor the point, but I think it's kind of silly to refer to 1/4 mile times with such a thoroughbred sports car like the GTR. Personally, I think that most people place way too much emphasis on 0 to 60 times, and 1/4 mile performance. Being that traction is one of, if not the most important factors to acceleration performance, 0 to 60 and 1/4 mile times can be misleading. What I'm far more concerned about (In regards to acceleration performance) is a cars roll-on performance. I think that's where two cars that post very similar 0 to 60 and 1/4 mile times, may perform quite differently in other acceleration aspects. I think a good example of this is the current crop of 6 liter AMG tuned V12's (i.e., the "65" cars). I'm sure that with anywhere from 737 to over 900 lb/ft of torque (depending on if it's stock), traction is the limiting factor in accelration performance. I'm sure that there are other cars that can match the 65's 0 to 60 and 1/4 mile performance, but most likely would get annihalated from a 85 mph roll-on where traction is no longer the limiting factor. I'm not sure if my understanding of physics is correct here, but I also believe that the weight of a car has a greater effect of performance when launched from a dead stop, and less so once the car is moving. Of course the weight obviously still has an effect, but less so once the car starts rolling (Can anyone verify or dispute that?).

Anyway, I've digressed here. There's no doubt that Derek's E55 is unbelieveably fast, and I give it all its due respect, but I'm sure that in anything but a 0 to 60, or 1/4 mile run, the GTR will out-run it without too much effort...

Best regards,
Matt

Matt,

So you mean to tell me that dereks' car can outrun one of these???
After personally going to LeMans 3 times in my life '97,'98 and '99. I can attest to just how fast these cars are. I really doubt that Derek's car can beat it. It would be an interesting drag race for sure.

I was just screwin around. At 3.9 seconds 0-60, it would be a dead tight race in the quarter. I think with it's reduced weight, it would take me in the quarter but it would be close. It's just fun to think what it takes from these supercars to beat our grocery getters.

MBH,

My assumption was that the road version of the CLK GTR (Remember that the cars that you saw at LeMans were the modified race versions) would be running a comparable 11 second or so quarter mile time. Like I said, I didn't recall he exact time for the GTR, and 11.5 seconds in the quarter is phenonemal for just about ANY car, so hence forth my very flawed logic...

How flawed you asked? By more than two seconds!! I just looked up the stats for the 1998 CLK GTR (Which I should have done in the beginning), and every source I checked quotes a 1/4 mile time of 9.4 seconds!! that's incredible. I was surprised that it was so fast, despite the car in consideration. That makes it quicker than the Enzo, Carrera GT, SLR Mclaren, and every other road legal car I can think of.

Part of my logic in my assumption that the CLK GTR was more of a low 11 second car was because of its extremely tall first gear, and that it would have limited traction with road tires, but apparently it's not much of a hindrerance, is it? That's truly amazing, especially when you consider that a fast quarter mile time was surely a very low priority of the GTR's mission statement. Damn impressive!

Matt

Matt,

I told you the CLK GTR was a fast one. Not many cars can touch it especially a street car. I was at Le Mans in '99 when Peter Dumbeck's #5 CLK GTR went airborn and into the woods. One of the most spectacular race accidents I have ever seen period. Peter was close to 200mph when his CLK GTR went airborn. I watched the CLK GTR's exccelerate out of Indianapolis corner and the raw power those things had was just awesome. I'll never forget it.

Here's some pics of the CLK GTR fipping in practice.
