Looking at a 2002 in black. Did they have a metallic black in 2002?

Yes.
In 02 there was:
standard, non-metallic black

Obsidian Black metallic

Black Opal metallic (blueish-greenish tint)

designo Mocha Black metallic (metallic black with a brownish tint)

Yep, hotmalma is correct. I have an 'Obsidian Black' which is basically a Metallic Black. It sparkles in the sun
