Hello from the U.K

Hi,

I picked up my car yesterday and wondered if there are any other clk black series owners who post on here and live in the cold, damp United Kingdom ?

Thanks to reading the posts on here I have learnt a fair bit before buying the car - cheers for the info !!

So far very pleased with this awesome car.

We should try to get Jeremy Clarkson active on the board. He is certainly the most visible owner.
Congrats on your purchase. AS

Congrats and welcome! What color did you get? Must be nice to be able to throw it on a ferry and take a few hour drive over to Germany and hop on the Autobahn or run the Ring. If I hop in my car and drive for 4-5 hours in any direction I end up in Minneapolis, St. Louis, Detroit...or some other god forsaken place with lots of traffic and people that drive 5 under the speed limit in the fast lane and still don't move over unless you practically bump them out of the way. Don't get me wrong, I love my country, just not our speed limits, roadways or most of our drivers

If you get the chance, try Arizona, New Mexico, or Montana. Lots of highway, minimal traffic, & scarce police (especially at night).

No need for a ferry anymore. They build a tunnel under the English channel to France a few years back. Leave the island in the morning and have lunch in Paris. After that you hop back in your car and a few hours later you have dinner in Germany. Here is a tip. If you want to go flat out on the Autobahn, Sunday night is the best. There will be no trucks allowed until midnight and the traffic is very light. Keep in mind, there are certain sections that do have a speed limit. My favorite is Stuttgart to Munich. First thing you'll notice is that the pavement is as smooth as glass. And than my favorite, people actually use their mirrors and see you coming long before you are on their bumper.
I usually go once a year to visit my parents, maybe one day we can meet and I'll show you what Germany is all about. I'm sure you would love it.

Thanks for the welcome chaps.

jrcart - I bought the same colour as you; Iridium silver. Originally thought I would get a black car but fell in love with the silver when I saw it in the flesh !!

I went to the superbowl in Detroit in 2006 so I know what you mean about the driving in the Detroit area. I have driven a fair bit in the states and went through a stage of getting a ticket on nearly every journey. I don't know how you guys do it. I drove fom NYC to Pittsburgh ( and back ) and trying to keep to 65 mph when your the only car within a mile radius is almost impossible. Unfortunately the accent did not help with the law enforcement officer !!

I think in the U.k we are blessed with some great race circuits, it helps make up for the weather ( to a point ! )

Thumbs up on the silver. The speed limits in our country have nothing to do with safety. They are only there to generate revenue for the government with fines for breaking the posted speed limits. Even the cheapest of cars now days can safely travel at 85mph, but if they raised the limits to 80 or 85 it would cost them millions and millions of dollars of lost fine revenue. Sure, there are people (like me) that would still travel 20 over the posted limit even if it where 85, but the majority would run at a pace between 85-90 and that would mean no speeding fines for the greedy government.

smp - Maxing the car on the Autobahn is on the to do list.

Drove a 911 in the '90's to Italy and back. During the stretch through Germany I didn't drop below 140 mph for miles. Trouble is though when you get back 70 mph limit it becomes very hard to stay legal because you have become used to travelling at high speed.

There are some great roads coming from Italy through Austria into Germany. I suppose you took the Brenner Pass, which was a lot of fun, especially in a 911. Speaking of Porsche's, I put my order in for a January allocation on a 997 with the PDK. I might take European delivery and pick it up in Zuffenhausen. Great way to break the new car in.

I know exactly what you mean in regards when backing off from high speeds, especially when you've been on it for a long time. Your brain adjusted to the speed and when you have to go slower, it feels like you could open the door and walk faster.

At least you don't have the dreaded speed cameras there yet. Talk about revenue inducing. We have both fixed site and mobile cameras and they take no prisoners !! 34 in a 30 and bang, no talking your way out of it.
Everybody hates these things, except the government and some police forces.
