Modern Collectibles??

Cut n past below is from a Fox article on "Modern Collectibles." While I understand this is only the opinion of one writer, I've seen other, similar sentiments in the past on this car. 1,000 imported vs @ 350 for the CLK63 Black, with the black clearly having more features to differentiate it from its AMG counter-parts of that era...but still not recognized in certain circles as "collectible." Not a rant, a complaint, or *****...just further recognition of the fickle collector car market.

  1. BMW 1M
Only about 6,000 BMW 1Ms were built, and less than 1,000 made it to the U.S. It therefore has rarity going for it, and as a real BMW M car, it has pedigree and name recognition going for it as well. As the smallest and lightest M car in recent memory and with its twin-turbo straight-six, the 1M really appealed to the BMW faithful and many felt that it was a more rewarding car to drive than BMW’s darling M3, and at a significantly cheaper price to boot. With that kind of appeal and because there are so few to go around, don’t expect the 1M to be depreciating much.

Yes to the GT4 and manual Ferraris; no to the others. And as a collectible, a sorted manual E46 M3 is more preferable to a 1M, which IMO looks like a Bangle-ized M3. At ~3,296 lbs. its only a slightly lighter than the ~3415 lbs. M3. And C7 Z06 - really? Great car, but C6 ZR1 has more going for it as a modern collectible.

It all depends of what modern cars include. 2014 + or any cars from 2000 onward?
Because for the latter you have better P cars that are collectibles like the 997 GT3s. I do not agree on the Hellcat nor the 1M. I do see the latest GT350 R being one. SLS BS should be in the list as well!

CLK63 AMG Black Series & 1994 MB E500
There really isn't any modern Benzes (except the supercar variety CLK GTR, CLK DTM, SLR McLaren) that has appreciated. I have a 94 Benz Porsche built E500, I figured they'd be $100k by now given it's unique history, not even close. Still low mileage examples are in that high $30k maybe low $40k range or near 50% of its original sticker price. I really think the E500 is a great comparison car for Black Series future values. I think when year 2028 rolls around and the car hits 20 years old, really low mileage versions will draw $60-65k, which in reality is great resale for average cars, but this is no average car. I hope I'm wrong. I'll still have both cars anyway 20 years from now, if I'm still around, my son says he won't sell them either when they're passed on to him. So in reality this only matters to those who sell them and I'm not selling.
