Selling for less than a salvage titled car needing thousands of dollars in repairs,
if its just because of the 96k miles I take the high mileage car any day.

$31,000 for a CLK63 Black Series?? That is shockingly low....even with the mileage.

2008 Mercedes CLK 63 AMG Black Series.
I have seen a few M156 motors with over 200k miles, if this cars are kept stock and not abused they can go the long way at 96k if everything checks out its a super deal
this cars value will be (+) different in a few years.
For 65k you can buy both........

Unless you are affected by head bolt or cam/bucket issues

2008 Mercedes CLK 63 AMG Black Series.
We have many M156 powered cars here in Puerto Rico, our climate is excellent for all year round driving, lots of them have high mileage and I have never seen one with a headbolt or cam tappet failure, I have 57k miles on my car, last year I pulled the valve covers to replace the gaskets due to small leak, after inspection of the valvetrain found no abnormal wear on any component. On the headbolts if it happens I will repair the issue or if its too bad pick up another good used motor and done. I dont run away from high mileage cars never had a bad experience with one and they are cheaper, most cars with low miles just spend too long sitting inactive and this can be good for value but not for reliability, I have seen cars with ultra low miles have failures that no one can explain of any reason other than the lack of usage, my car was a daily driver for the previous owner and when I looked at the Mercedes dealer service records all I saw was the normal wear items like battery, brake pads, wiper blades etc, the biggest one was the engine mounts, how can some of this cars with some track time go for 100k or even higher without major problems and other low mile cars have headbolt and valvetrain failures.
On the value trend dont expect value increase for now, banks drive the prices for now because they dont care about rarity or exclusivity all they see is 2008 CLK63, but wait a few years when banks no longer finance and rarity and exclusivity drive the market.

Hi..

I almost bought that '08 Clk63 AMG BS located in Portland, Oregon 2 weeks ago. Seller listed on Auto Trader for $59,000 with 51,800 miles and Red on Black! However, I made an offer of $51,000 which was accepted subject to a PPI (Pre-Purchase Inspection). I flew to Portland and the downtown MB Dealer had the shop foreman do the PPI and found major issues that would cost $20,000+ excluding a new paint job (front end accident with a poor paint job as clear coat starting to flake). Needless to say, I passed!

If you are referring to the Red BS that I posted about above

then you were wise to walk away -

The people that are trying to sell this BS are in over their heads

and have been trying to make a big buck on this car for the last

four years -

Buyer beware or as Clark Griswald once said

"Holy **** where's the Tylenol"

Thank-You

DB.....
Here's what I know:
This car was in a front end smash on October 2012. The car was obviously not repaired by a certified MB approved collision shop! The current independent dealer selling this car on consignment, Freeman Motors (Portland, Ore.) lists the most recent CARFAX!

Dan Babiy, owner of Grand Prix Motors, sold this car to the current owner in December 2014 for $51,307. The guy who owns it only put 3,000± miles since purchase and renewed the registration in 2015 and 2016 and failed to renew since.

I saw the listing on Auto Trader approx. 4 months ago @ $59,000 and, although its Fire Opal Red color (some call it Mars Red) is 1 of only 10 of a total 350 CLK63 AMG BS vehicles imported into the US, the price seemed to be low based on mileage and the red on black color!

I started my due diligence by accessing my EPC/WIS/ASRA program and pulled the build-sheet. A couple of friends of mine, both service managers at MB dealerships in my area, researched the vehicle's service records which showed the vehicle received "A" and "B" services in 2015, 2016 and 2017. Additional services and repairs that were recommended were declined by the owner!!!
In addition, I was made aware of the "head bolts" as well as the "cam bucket" issues. Apparently, the M156 engine, up to the 1st production run up to 61,000 motors, the "female torx" head bolts sometimes had blocked holes in the heads and coolant could not flow and, consequently, they over-heated and the heads "popped off" which lead to blown head gaskets! An ensuing and very expensive engine catastrophe was very possible! However, the probable risk, according to MB New Jersey, was 1% to 3% for failure. Head bolts, my wholesale cost, are $950±, excluding labor!

As far as the "cam/buckets" go, this is an expensive proposition as the wholesale cost per cam is $775±, excluding labor. In addition, there is variable cam timing and the cam gears and a small pin the cam gear uses, often wear. The cams and buckets, etc., are sold as a kit and I understand is in the $5 - $6,000 range, excluding labor!

If you notice the date of 11/19/2018 on the current CARFAX (as of 11/30/2018), that was my PPI that was completed by MB of Portland. The shop foreman and I spent almost 2 hours mostly under the car and there were 19 items totaling $20,000±, excluding repainting the front bumper, rear bumper and entire right side of vehicle up to the roof line as the paint is actually peeling off!

In addition, the 2012 accident repair shop replaced both headlights with non-OEM parts and someone apparently cut both headlamps in half (top to bottom) to replace the OEM lights with small led lights! All of the interior lights were also replaced with small led lights, too!

On November 20, 2018, the car was consigned for sale with Freeman Motors in Portland.

Don't hold your breath as this BS is a waste of time -

This BS was listed back in the fall of 2014 and other

than a new forum member posting that he purchased

it to track and never updated - there were many questions

asked that were never answered -

Thanks for the heads up. Looks like it might just be a super old website listing...

Even if it wasn't, too much drama regardless.

If it's the same car I'm thinking of, I noticed in the pics the CF Ash tray lid had a few cracks in it. Wonder what else is wrong with it. Even $75k seems like a good deal
