New and old CLS together

Hey guys and gals.

Had to swing by the dealer the other afternoon for a Service C.

Anyway, I got a reality check when waiting in the service area for my courtesy car.

The new car really looks great in person. I came very close to walking over to the other side of the dealer to test drive a new one but could hear my wife yelling at me inside my head!!!

Anyway, I thought you would like to see what I saw through the windows. Sorry for the i phone pics through the glass. You still get the idea.

I don't know what brand wheels on the new black CLS 550 in the foreground. He said they were one of the dealer's upgrade wheels in the rack on the showroom floor when he bought the car. My old tired 06 in the background.

Question for the new owners. How is the ventilation system compared to the old car?? Does it still suck or did they imorove it? (airflow)

Thanks for sharing! I love side-by-side pictures.

The old one looks more "Coupe-ish" while the new one looks like it's embracing its Sedan nature more, but the new one really got the much-needed slight enlargement of the greenhouse (interesting opposite from the way more cars are going, with narrower greenhouses, resulting in more claustrophobic interiors and poorer visibility, which shows just how far M-B went with narrowing the greenhouse of the original CLS). The old ones greenhouse looks more swoopy and "Concept Car"-ish, but I feel that it hampered the interior ambiance too much, functionality too much, and looked a bit disproportionate from the cars (too much metal, too little window, looks kind of funny sometimes.... And truly striking others).

Anyway, all that aside, I wouldn't be too upset as an original CLS owner. Although I personally prefer the new one by a little bit, the old one doesn't really look dated by it IMO, and it actually looks smoother, and is a more harmonious and cohesive design from the side profile, without all the altering-angled and randomly connected lines play.

wow,I'm sorry but the w219 looks totally outdated. I didn't think it would like that far but it does. It looks so petite too lol. Like a little brother standing next to his older brother(Though that could be possibly due to the rim size)

Nice pics, I wouldn't say the W219 looks "totally outdated". As KA said, the older CLS does have smoother lines to it, but this is all subjective stuff. What really sets the W219 off is the AMG kit, it looks much better than the older one in the pic, that is one major part that makes it appear to be outdated as well. I like them both, but I will be moving on to a newer model in about a year or so.

I don't really feel those rims either on the W220 (2012) either. They look somewhat out of place.

Very cool to see them both side by side, thanks for sharing those pictures. The new one definitely looks sharp but it's missing that low profile coupe look that made the CLS special. As it was said, it looks too much like a sedan.

Yea guys.

I agree. My plain jane 06 500 is about a bargain as you can get no frills to fill it out. In person the old car looks smaller than the new one. It wan't just the rims. The roofline is still there but the new car is really buffed out. If my car was a 55 or 63 with 20's it probably wouldn't look so drastically different but for the pictures sake and comparison it makes the point.

The new ones are nice to look at. Mine did look tired next to the new one, but mine against a new c or e kinda holds it own. I like the new E and c too. Just opinions.

I guess if my car had these babies on it, it wouldnt have been as painful!
