BMW's Gran Coupe debuts

The "4 door coupe" segment just got more interesting...

http://www.insideline.com/bmw/6-seri...-pictures.html

I have to say, I am liking BMW's offering. There is something screwed up with the inside of the trunk (see pictures), but this 6-series will give the CLS a run for its money with its updated and more powerful twin-turbo V8. I like that BMW kept the full length console but added a 5th seatbelt so you can cram a 5th person back there if needed.

I still love the CLS, though. Why do the Germans make choosing a car so difficult?

Isn't that sort of counterintuitive? that console is pretty much making that 5th person's life worse by giving him/her no legroom whatsoever.

lol there's no point for that 5th seatbelt.

The interior looks really nice though. I like that color combo

If they price it competitively with the other 4 door coupes on the market it will be a success - the 2 door 6 versions are overpriced

If I wanted a Pontiac Grand Prix I would have gotten it back in the day.
This back to the future thing with the 6-ers is design gone empty.

I agree -- I wouldn't want to be back there if I didn't have to be. Sometimes, though, you need to cram a 5th person in the car, and with the GC, you can do so and feel good that they actually have a seat belt.

I squeeze my coworkers in my car all the time to drive a mile or so for lunch. It is a quick ride, and having the 5th seat might make the difference between taking one car or two.

I'm probably in the minority on this one, but it looks very bland. Looks like the design has gone backwards in time.

Well, I just noticed that if you go to the bmw.co.uk site, it has pricing up for the Gran Coupe. Sadly, in the UK they are pricing the Gran Coupe at about 2000 pounds more than the real coupe, so that means the 8 cylinder Gran Coupe will likely start at $85,000+ in the US. With that pricing scheme, I think even the 6 cylinder Gran Coupe will have a higher base price than the CLS550!! It is quite easy to add 15k+ in options to the base 6 series, so it looks like the 650i Gran Coupe will be more price competitive with the S550 or CLS63 than with the CLS550. Interesting decision by the folks at BMW...

The CLS550 is a bargain compared to the 6 series - you can easily spend over 90k on a 6 cylinder 6 series coupe. I guess they are hoping style will sell regardless...

The pricing is messed up, the 6GC is more expensive than their flagship 7 series. I can't wait till BMW discounts the **** out of the 6GC. In the US it would be interesting to see how the buyers would respond to this pricing. CLS63 would be a great alternative to the Gran Coupe. Well lets see how the US pricing plays out.

What style, CLS550 or 63 have a bigger road pretense than a 6 series. The 6 looks just like a mini 7 or a 5. Lot of people might not even know the difference .

Totally agreed. I absolutely LOVE the new 6-Series Coupe (with M-Pack), but it is stupidly priced. BMW are out of their minds right now with pricing. The CLS is indeed a bargain compared to the 6-Series.

As for the GC, I don't really like it, looks late-to-the-game tired and forced, and the 2 Door crushes it in looks, IMO.

I was thinking of ordering a CLS in April or May for Summer delivery as a 2013 model. I must rethink everything now after seeing this new 6 series. If the price is competitive I could very well go back to Bimmer.

I think every BMW out now looks the same. I think they're horrendous lately, and this Gran Coupe just made things a little more uglier. Don't like it, hire a new designer, this guy really sucks. And the 6 series was the only one Bimmer I would buy, but not this one.

That's the biggest problem with BMW's. They all look so alike, they're practically making each other irrelevant with each new release. The 7 was cool until the 5 came along, which looks like a slightly smaller 7 for almost half the price, then the 6 GC comes along which looks like a 5 with a sleeker roofline, etc. BMW makes it harder to justify paying up for models that are essentially the same thing as the lower models but with very slight design changes to me.

It all comes down to this....

I like the new 6 series coupe. It reminds me of the first 6 series coupe that was last seen in 1989. However, I am unsure of what the 6 GC represents. Is it really necessary to have a 4-door version of the 6 based on the 5, priced like a 7? When it comes to the "4-door coupe" segment I prefer the CLS. Even the A7 and Panamera remind me of 4-door sedan hatchbacks and not 4-door coupes. I only wish the CLS came without B-pillars to go with its frameless doors.

i dont wanna sound bias towards mercedes and the fact that i have a CLS, but i still dont think there is anything on the market that compares to it, despite the fact that bmw now has the GC and audi has the A7. i find the styling on the GC rather reserved, where the CLS is aggressive and has a very attractive look and roofline, i think the A7 is just ugly, the front looks nice but once i see the back i dont want to look at the car again. Ive driven several panamera turbos, and the more and more i see the car the look is awesome, and the engine and transmission is outrageous, you guys have to drive that. but if i were faced with the decision of getting a panamera turbo S or a performance package CLS63 i think i would go with the merc, just because of the price, and i find the cls a sexier car, and it may be just as quick

I'm glad I didn't wait for the GC. I'll say that much, the spy shots didn't lie. It doesn't evoke any positve emotion from me like the CLS or even the XF did.
Even after going on an extended test drive with the 5 it didn't feel like anything special. So it's based on a 5, priced like a 7... I'll keep my CLS.

2012 CLS550
I'm fifty/fifty on this car. I've been a huge BMW'er for the past 8 years - not counting a W221 S550 I had for about a year... just finished with a 2011 750li before getting my new CLS. What soured me on the 750li was that the 5 series actually looked better than it in many ways, and was more advanced. They killed the high-endedness (is that a word?) and exclusivity, which is what some of us pay for, of the 7 series, but more power to the 5 series owners! I was seriously about to pull the trigger on a 6-coupe with all of the stuff in it (B&O audio, full LED, etc), but went with the CLS and couldn't be happier.
This 6 GC? Looks alright. Kind of uneventful looking IMO when you look at the entire line of BMW offerings at the moment, but by itself looks nice. I guess I've just gotten a bit jaded on BMW designs of current. Give me an e60 M5 or the e81 M6 anytime, love those more aggressive looks.
One drawback of the MB vs current BMW offerings? THE AUDIO OPTIONS! Pay thousands extra for the HK soundsystem, and it doesn't sound much more involving than my Mazda3 daily driver! Need to get some bass in these cars. Compare that to the B&O offerings of the new BMW's, it's night and day. I think MB has it right with the CLS in all categories, except they need to quit with the old stuffy guy image when it comes to audio! We don't all listen to Jazz and Opera lol.

BMW have gotten lazy with the homogenous designs, IMO. They found a nice design language, but damn are they milking it.... and milking it.... and....

I'm digging the new BMW's, save teh 1-Series. The 1 is nice but only in hatch form. The 2dr coupe is stupid-looking.
