Only 550s and AMG offered in states! Here's a good article on it for reference. If that major cut in performance doesn't bother you, then go for it!

I can share my experience with the CLS250CDI. Of corse U can not expect the performance of a bigger engine, but the car goes well with the biturbo 4cylinder engine.
U have a bunch of torque (500Nm) and the 7G-tronic makes it a plausible choice.
The fuel consumption it's great with about 5.1 ltrs combined consumption and the autonomy catalogued by 1340km tops, it's a great efficient car for it's 1785kg weight. U have the same interior, goodies, and exterior packages that an CLS500 could have, so we are talking about the engine here.
When I drove it, I wasn't amazed by the engine performance, but it was surely enough.
I've noticed the 7G-Tronic interaction with the 4cyl Biturbo engine it's not as smooth as the 350CDI, but it works anyways. And the noise of the engine it's not refined as the 350CDI (or neither less the V8s). But sure it's not a tractor.
In the end, if you're not so into performance, but want good fuel comsumpion, and for the less expensive in the range, it is a valuable option, but if U can extend a bit your budget the V6 CDI it's more suitable.

2013 CLS250 CDI
Thks a lot for the advice. Really appreciate you taking the time to give a fair reponse.
I have just had the CLS 250 CDI for the weekend to try, and understand that the engine is probably the minimum you would get away with in a car of this type. Although it is amazing for a 2.2 engine and no slouch. The performance is the same as my 6 cylinder E320 CDI that I have had now for nearly 9 years from new. The big benefit being the fuel economy. I did not find the engine noisy or gruff as in some reviews.
Was very tempted to try the 350 CDI as I understand it is really smooth for a diesel, but with the ever increasing fuel prices here and the environmental considerations along with where can you use the extra power and that I would keep this for around 8 years. Well I have ordered one and I am going to do a factory collect around end September.
Might put my overall view of the car from the weekend on a seperate thread.
