I am impressed with the gas mileage of my 13 CLS

I had a 09 E350, which got about 19/24 for mileage, but it usually averaged 19-20. Which was fine. I'd fill the car about every other week. When I got my new CLS550, the mileage was listed as 17/25, which I assumed would average 17 or so. I was prepared for an uptick in my fuel bills each month.

Now that I have had the car for a few months, I went back and looked at my average MPG and fuel bills. I was amazed that I am not buying any more gas than before and my average MPG is 19.7 mpg. Which is the same as my old E350. And the CLS has 134 more horsepower!!!

And I am not a super light driver. I push the car sometimes. Every now and then, when there is nobody around, I drop it into Sport mode and do a fast launch. So, I am not driving like a grandma.

I went on a long trip and averaged a very respectable 23.9 mpg on the highway. I was amazed at how efficient this car is, while still being really fun to drive.

Its impressive how engine technology has advanced.

My wife asked me yesterday why I needed such a powerful car. I just smiled and said "because it makes me happy." I then floored it, the car launched from a red light with that oh-so-satisfying-rush. Then she got mad at me.

Ah well, it was worth it.

the EPA numbers are conservative and driving style really dominates the real life mpg.

My C63 gets me 19 mpg (for 6 miles city + 12 miles hwy) once in a while and its rated at 13 (city) /18 (hwy). AT the same time I have pushed it and seen it drop to 15 or so.

Not that I care, but the fact is driving dynamics dominate the mpg.

I am also impressed with the gas mileage. My CLS is yielding about the same as a 2011 C300 that I had. That C300 was horrible on gas mileage, I could never get over 17mpg average in the city (same as advertised), keep in mind though that I am at 2500ft elevation and I run the A./C a lot here in AZ with all the heat.
Back to what you were saying, I also agree with you on the fact that the CLS 50 I a remarkable machine that get incredible gas mileage.

I have gotten 26.3 mpg hwy in my 2014 CLS550 4matic - pretty consistent on a roughly 800+ mile roadtrip so it is not the benefit of Eco start stop. I think it is the benefit of a pretty low drag coefficient given the streamlined shape of the car. Here is why: I attached the OEM standard roof carrier on top, put a set of skis on the carrier and my hwy mpg on the car dropped to about 21-22 hwy on a 250 mile road trip from NJ to VT.

Yet when I do the same drive NJ to VT in our SUV with skis on top, there is very little change in our hwy MPGs cos our SUV does not have a low drag coeff to start with.

So the shape we love is what is helping us get good MPGs hwy.

I agree about the mileage ... On a recent trip returning from Galveston to Dallas, the computer indicated that I got 25.3 mpg, with and average speed of just over 62 mph. And a significant portion of that trip I was going 80+ mph ... I45 has a stretch where the speed limit is 75, so setting the Distronic on 80 or 82 keeps up with the traffic. This all compares to my E350 which got just over 27 mpg for the same trip and same speeds. I loved my E, but it doesn't even begin to compare to the CLS 550 for grins per mile!

The big difference is city consumption. That is where V8's fall apart.

I got 27mpg this weekend over 210 miles, going between 75-80. On my last tank I got 16.9 of all city driving.
