My Issues with my 2015 cls 550

Thought I would share for anyone with issues with their CLS..

Picked up my car in August 2015. 2015 CLS 550 with every possible option! Traded in my 2010 E550 which was an amazing car.

Right away, I noticed the following issues:

- Brake pedal had a dead spot when first applied
- When car was stopped with brake applied...if you let off brake there was a delay, then a binding feeling, then a jerk and then car would start to move forward
-Car would have a very harsh downshift from 5 to 4
- Bunch of small other issues

After going back and forth to the dealer about 20 times, and them trying a bunch of updates, they finally said the only option was to replace the transmission...but they did not think anything was wrong with the car and would do it just to make me happy.

There is no lemon law in Canada...so I ended up negotiating to pay a bit more money and order a brand new 2016 instead. I did not want to have a transmission replaced in a car with just 4000 miles on it.

Hopefully my 2016 with the transmission will give me better luck

I'm assuming you had the new 9G with your '15 cls 550.

I noticed some hard downshifts/clunks when testing the new 2016 GLE450 coupe with the 9G for my wife. I was hoping MB finally rectified the hard downshifting transmission problems the 7G was notorious for, but it appears they still have some work to do.

I did not have the 9g on my 15 (4matic) but the new one will have it.

I drove one that had it. I found it nice.

Peter: I read through both your threads while I went through this process. I think I had the exact same issue that you did. Did you notice a binding feeling when releasing brake from a stop as well?

Poomobile: ok that's a little encouraging but as mentioned I felt it on the GLE 450 with 9G. It seems the 4 matic cars have the most issues, I don't think the 7G and 4 matic go well together and it appears the 9g/4matic may not be any different.

Peter: so it was the clutch pack that finally fixed your first 550 and how many miles did you put on it after the clutch pack replacement to verify it was indeed fixed?

I have the same binding feeling when releasing the brakes from a stop, almost feel like the calipers are not releasing fast enough. It does this mostly when the brakes are cold during the first 5 or 6 stops in the morning. I don't see how this can be a transmission problem though.

I am pretty sure the binding is from the transmission. If you listen, you can actually hear the car rev down then you know it's going to do it. I think it's a fuel saving feature that's more pronounced in some cars than others. Mine does not do it when hold is engaged or when brake is lightly applied. It also can be a problem with hill start assist engaging when not on hill. Mine always binds at every stop...not just few in the morning. It so annoying

My e class with the 7g was 4 matic and it was flawless. If my next one is not right I am screwed

Nice to hear this setup can work properly, wish it was the norm.

Isn't the paused braking supposed to happen? I thought this was a safety feature so the car doesn't start rolling when you let off the brakes on a hill or if you slightly let off the brakes and the car starts to inch forward if you're not paying attention.

It even has a "P" indicator on the display, once the car starts rolling it goes away.

I'm pretty sure the "P" indicator is to show if there is an available parking spot for park assist.

The hill start assist feature feeling is different than what I am experiencing. I know it's not right as a I have driven numerous Mercedes that have not exhibited this behavior.

The clutch pack finally fixed it but by that time I wanted a new car

By the time they were ready to replace the clutch pack on the second e550 I wanted my money back

I never had a binding feeling when releasing the brake unless on slight incline but this is intended... It's hill start assist

Good to know the clutch packs did the trick.

Apparently the valve body change on my previous car corrected my issue, which was related to a solenoid causing erratic torque converter lock up behavior.

In the new replacement car I had a very firm shift from park to reverse after the car sat for about 4 hrs after being previously driven all day. Tried it again right afterward several more times and it was fine, but by then the fast idle cycle had already completed. Going to keep an eye on this, otherwise the new car's gearbox is shifting quite well.

Just got my replacement 2016 and I am a happy mercedes owner again. Car is running the way it supposed to. No binding feeling after brake pedal release. No harsh 5-4 downshifts.

Unfortunately had to pick it up after a snowstorm!! I am liking the 9 speed but I notice it starts in second gear now in E mode. No other changes from 2015 and I missed the CarPlay build date start by a few weeks.
